So dumb me just plants a foamy this afternoon due to reversed ailerons. I've ran out of room on the 8U Futaba TX & just did a quick setup earlier for a 4 channel biplane. Somehow ailerons look correct when they are backwards. I will be checking directions before each flight & leaning with the ailerons. That's the sure fire way for me.
So - the number is 4 planes in 21 years down due to reversed ailerons for me. (oh the shame!) Thanks Terry |

have not lost any do to reversed servos but I did put in a funtana 40 one time because the control rod I found after the crash would lock at full deflection on the edge of the servo. I was freaking jacked

I killed a foamie on it's maiden today. Launched with reversed elevator. I could have sworn I checked that. I hate when I do something stupid like that....

None, I do the same check everytime before I start the engine, and before takeoff that I do in full scales, move the stick left, say "left up, right down" stick right "right up, left down", pull back, say "elevator up" push forward "elevator down", rudder right, say "rudder right" rudder left, say "rudder left".
It's all about routine, do it every time and it'll become second nature. I've been flying full scale for decades, and when my father was teaching me how to fly, we'd always do that check, and I still do it every day, full scale or models. It'll save your life in a full scale, and save you money in a model. Just make it a routine. |

One of our new pilots just bought a Bandit RTF from BVM, It was Bob Violets personal Bandit arf all setup on spektrum. He brought it to the field and asked me to maiden it for him. We put 4 flights on it and it flew great.
His jet instructor came out with him the next day to buddy box him and didn't think the DX 7 was good enough so he changed the system out to the 10x on Spektrum. The instructor crashed and burned on takeoff. The ailerons were reversed. That was a $10,000 mistake.

It will fly!!!

Yep, I'll admit it. I'm a dumba$$ I have done it once on a .60 size Extra. The bad part is that I did the pre-flight, and my flying buddy was standing there and didn't catch it either. This was shortly after I got back into the hobby after a few years off.
One other one I pulled was left a pushrod too long on a foamy. All was fine for two flights then the pushrod, which was on the rudder stuck into the trailing edge of the aileron. It locked the rudder over almost full left.

Two. I crashed my trainer in front a huge crowd at a fly in because I had the wrong model selected and the elevator was reversed. I had the same issue with a 3D profile about a year later that I built from a kit. That one sucked.
Since then I have switched to the DX7. Model Match is now required functionality on any new radio purchase I make. I have also developed a habit of doing control directions tests every time I take off. Good habit to have even with the model match. |

Every time I take off I do this:
Elevator Up - Up Elevator Down - Down Rudder Left - Left Rudder Right - Right Aileron Left - Left Aileron Up Aileron Right - Right Aileron Up Or just say: "up up, down down, left left, right right, left up, right up" Takes two seconds and might save the airplane. |

I've never had reversed ailerons, but my 35%'s ailerons stopped working during an IMAC practice and I freaked! I was flying inverted too. Oh well, thank god for the rudder.

Not a single one, in 10yrs of flying. I know how to set up a radio.
I just can't fly worth a ! Every single crash, except for one radio hit, has been because of my dumb thumbs. I get a kick out of guys blaming radio hits. I've been hit and knocked around a few times, but only ONE time was it bad enough to lock up and knock my plane down. Some of the guys at the field have NEVER thumbed a plane in. They crash from radio hits. :homo: |

Like Gareth said. Before I realease the plane after starting it. I say and do Left-right, up-down, left right. While moving the ailersons left and right, then the elevator up and down, and then the rudder left then right.... Yes, I lost a foamy when I was learning to this, but have seen 4 others. Silly mistake, and certainly preventable.
