This technology will make electric powered real airplanes a possibility.

These guys are gonna need those cells quick.
http://aeroconversions.com/E-Flight/ I don't know if they have flown the E-powered Sonex yet but it seriously needs some better cells to make full scale electric flying more practical. Comparing the quantum leaps in electric flight in RC that I've been active in for 15 years, folks may laugh now at only 1hr flight time but the technology can only improve with time. A 90% efficient motor is just waiting for the cells to make it shine. Plus, we modelers can reap the technological benefits as they trickle down.

Guess what?? It's here, but the cheaper method is building the packs yourself. Go to E-Bay and
look for Dewalt 36V Batteries. It will cost you anywhere from $75.00 and up depending on how many people are bidding. Also Google A123 batteries and look for the "How to Build A123 packs." In the build thread, there is a how to dismantle the Dewalt 36V pack. One of the better and better priced chargers for these batteries is the FMA Cellpro 4s charger. FMA also sells the battery packs, if you have no desire to build your own. BTW.. shipping is $20.00, plus a $2.00 insurance fee. The Dewalt Battery Pack contains 10 individual cells. Each cell is rated at 3.6 volts and 2300 Mah. a 2 cell battery pack will weight about an ounce more than the Fromco 2600Mah pack, but will last longer than the 5200Mah pack. At least, that is what is being said by those who have already tried them. As is usual, costs for this new technology will be initialy high on the market. The costs will dip slightly until demand for them grows. It will then go to who knows how high. Do the research.. you may be happy you did. Gerald |

Nano technology is one day going to change the world we live in. Look at Intel and it's new 45nm technology in their chips. The carbon nano tubes that are being developed will be used in endless applications one day. The sky is not the limit when you bring this technology into play.

I wonder about vibration? Even electrics can have some vibration with poorly balanced props. Will the nanowires break?? Just like the new 2.4ghz radios that are still going through a improvement cycle, time will tell if they will be good for R/C operation.

I haven't seen anything but suspect that this may suffer the same 1C charge limitation as existing Li technology. The guys at MIT may have something similar (based on nano tech) but without the charge/discharge limitations of Li tech. It also looks like the "battery" may finally outlast what it goes into! Five minute flights don't look so bad if you can recharge in 30 seconds!

Sorry about that. I intended to put the link to the MIT article in the previous post but was too quick on the send key. Here is the link. http://www.sciencentral.com/articles...e_id=218392803

WALTER,
That link takes me to the home page. What cells and chemistry are you refering to. I can find plenty on Li_Ion but is there something new please?? |

folks -
It will probably take about 3 to 5 years before we see the enhanced '10X" capacity cells in mass for RC use.. But it will be worth the wait... ![]() Ronster |
