Default Funtana S90 Engine Selection - Saito vs. OS

Well, Just from reading the other threads on here I can see that the support for Saito is pretty overwhelming. But I'm going to toss this out there anyway. Here's my situation:

I Picked up a Funtana S90 late last fall with plans of putting in a "brand new" never been started OS .91 4-stroke Series I! Its about a 13 year old motor and while I haven't been doing a lot of heavy aerobatics for the last 2-3 years I did have an old Laser 200 (I think) w/ OS .70 4-stroke Series I and absolutely loved that motor. The thinking behind this engine was that I already owned it and that it would take some time getting used to 3D rates and all the beginner stuff before doing the hovering thing. I figured it'd be good for at least half the season after which point I could pick something up with a bit more grunt. However, as we wait for snow to melt up here I'm starting to question my engine selection. This of course after I've already drilled all the holes etc for the .91...

My dad is hardcore OS as we can both recall lots of members having issues with older Saito 4-stroke motors (like 10 years ago). He's been a big non-believer in Saito since, but I have seen quite a few guys the last 2-3 years using Saito engines with seemingly great success but mostly in scale aircraft. So my question is has Saito finally gotten it right? Are they dogs to set up? Can they handle the heat of being enclosed in a hot cowl? My OS .70 fired up first flip right out of the box and operated that way for 2 solid years. Never over heated, even in the hot cowl of the Laser. (of course I wasn't hovering with it but...) Just put the starter to it, flip the choke and she'd fire right up.

So anyway, I guess I'm looking at thoughts/opinions on the O.S. 120 Series III w/pump (figure it might help if we have to move the tank back a bit to get good CG) vs the popular Saito 150 or 180.

well the OS .90 will not do well in the F90 at all, it will probably barely pull it out of a hover.

I think that the Saito 125 would be the best, saito's run real great, but the os 120 would be fine too I guess.

The saito 100 pulls mine out of a hover pretty well but it aint balistic.

thats what kinda answeres u are gonna get.

Well, I've seen some people that don't have any problems with their Saito engines but sure I see more people not having any problem with their OS engines so it's the matter of preference. I think the best size motor would be a 1.1-1.2 four strok for that plane. I have a friend who had YS 1.10 on the funtana 90 and it was great and powerfull. He bought a brand new YS 1.4 and never got it running one full flight, sent it in and got it back same way. He ended up selling the motor with less than 4 tanks of fuel. YS engines are either good running or nothing but frustration.

YS engines take a fair bit of time to break in and run properly...sounds like he didn't break it in at all?

Thanks for all the great replies thus far guys.. I should probably have mentioned that budget is somewhat a priority. From what I remember the YS stuff is extremely expensive.

Also, without doing any research, is the YS110 not about the same power as the OS 120 Surpass III? I know there aren't any published numbers on the entire YS line for some weird reason but one would think that it'd have to be close? So how come so few people are running OS 120s in the Funtana 90? Seems like everyone is running a YS110 in them. You guys just have too much money to spend or what!?

Finally, would it be a good idea to go with the pump or not on the Funtana 90 if I get an OS 120. I see it as another mechanical device that can fail (does it show I'm a computer tech?) on the other hand I want to make sure it gets proper fuel but its not like the tank for the F90 is in the tail or anything.

Konos,

I ran an the OS 120 that you're talking about on a Quest Pattern plane for about 1 1/2 years. It ran great and flew the plane well. The OS isn't as powerful as the YS 110, and the YS is quite a bit lighter. The OS 120 would fly the F-90 "pretty" good, it won't rocket out of a hover, but it will swing a pretty big prop, which is good for 3D.

I am currently running a Saito 150 in my Showtime, talk about a blast!! You really don't need that much power, it's just the way I bought it.

As for your OS 91 4-stroke, that would be a great motor for a 60 sized profile, maybe the Katana 70

I am pretty much at sea level, and the OS 1.20 was way underpowered for the plane, and was dogging out of a hover...not my style

YS 1.10 or Saito 1.25

He sent it in and they drilled out a part of the carb I guess, they said it was not open and they opened it. I remember vagely. He ran another 3 tanks and couldn't get running right, sold it.

I know he put half a gallon of fuel to break it in, wether it was enough or not, I don't know. I would answer any questions about DA50 Never owned a YS or Saito Got in gas fast.

I have a Saito 100, and I love it. That being said I would be nuts to put it on my Funtana 90 and expect real performance out of it. I even had a Webra 1.20 on it, and guess what???? no performance. Should have seen it coming, but the Webra is a sweet sweet engine built more for speed or sport flying. I have a Goldberg Ultimate bipe that loves that engine, so I had a match.

Now, I put a YS 1.20 on the Funtana and cannot imagine any better of a setup. I have heard the new 1.10 is excellent on there, and the Saito 1.25 is sweet too. I believe all of those are true because they make sense.

Go with a 4 stroke, and don't short yourself. I know YS engines are very expensive (I bought a 1.20 used and they are no longer made so I got a good deal on it). However, the Funtana is a completely different airplane now. For real, it is completely different. It went from a once a month flier, to preferred over my 33% Extra.... which is really saying something.

GO 4 stroke, and don't underpower. There is a REAL difference and you will notice for sure.

Funtanas are awesome if you match them with the right power plant.

That is perfectly said Viper! .. I had a 100 on mine but I didn't like it too well.. Just didnt have the right power. I liked my funtana a lot. I then bought a 125 from christmas money and OMG! I LOVE my funtana now! The right power plant makes a huge difference!
