Default DA85 CARB QUESTION

Well, the DA85 for the Ziroli P40 arrived today, but based on the speed at which I am building these days, probably wont actually be run till well after the warranty has expired. And I mean WELL AFTER! LOL.

Question on the carb:

For purposes of initially aligning the engine in that narrow P40 cowl, it would help to remove the carb. The carb/mounting plate/reed housing seem to be sealed with a blue silicon sealer. There does, however, seem to be a split line with a rubber gasket(?) on the nylon block.

Is it possible to remove the carb without have to reseal everything? I dont recall having things sealed like that on my DA100's.

TIA
Ira

Does anyone know if the Carb/Reed assembly easily splits at the black rubber gasket line on the block?

I have removed my carb without any problem. From what I can remember it came apart at the engine side of the reed block. I really don't remember seeing any sealer on anything though.

The rubber is just a thin coating, there's metal under it....

Ralph,

If I remove the 2 carb bolts, does the whole assembly (carb/reed block) separate, and do I have to use any additional sealer wgen reassembling.

DA seems to be using some kind of blue sealant at the joints, rather than gaskets.

thanks
Ira

Best way is to back out the red mounting screws just far enough to let the red spacer block and carb assembly come off as a "stack" and carefully set the assembly aside that way. Seperating them can allow the reed petals to dislodge.
There is a gasket (no sealant) between the red spacer block and the aluminum crankcase.
When remounting do not over tighten the mounting screws. 12 in. lbs. (Torque spec info located in the rear of the DA85 manual)

Jeff,

Thanks for the answer.

Another question (and we briefly discussed this a few weeks ago, but I wanted to confirm now that I have the engine in hand).

The firewall (which is non adjustable) is about 1 3/4to 2" behind the engine mounting lugs, and the instructions say to not use standoffs.

I can make a "false firewall" out of 1/4 or 3/8 ply, and mount that on the standoffs, but the hole spacing for the standoffs would not be much wider than the mounting holes on the engine itself. Maybe 3/4" each side with the same top to bottom spacing as the engine mounting lugs.

Would that make a significant improvement over mounting directly with standoffs.

thanks
Ira

Hi Ira
I have just purchased a Ziroli P40 and am planning on putting the DA85 in the front. Questions you may be able to answer for me , will the DA85 be totally hidden in the cowl? Is it possible to get a prop extension rather than make the stand offs longer? Also any tips on this model before I start building?
Thanks for your time

Here's how I mounted the DA85 for the Ziroli (with fiberglass fuse).

I didnt want to use a long prop extension on the engine considering how DA is concerned about vibration.

With Jtec's Pitts muffler (not the oversize one) everything in hidden in the cowl. I had to send the muffler back to Jtec to have just the front corner of the manifold trimmed, and it is currently enroute back to me, so no photos with the muffler.

Re: the P40.

If you are using the fiberglass fuse, it took a while to figure out how to get the engine mounting location (the firewall does not have side/downthrust engineered in).

I came up with a real novel way of doing it, and if you are interested I can post photos and description.

Hi Guys,
thanks very much for the info. Real glad to see the DA85 totally cowled, not nice to see bits sticking out.
I am doing the built up fuz (as you know over here in the UK we get lots of building time cus we can't fly as often as we want due to the constant rain, wind etc)!! Looks like a lot more room in the cowl than I expected. Once I've done a bit of building I post some pics. I was going to get my exhaust from JTec as well, so now they have dealt with yours, at least they will get mine right! Thanks again, be in touch soon

I gave Al Young at Jtec a heads up about your muffler so that he will remember what he did to mine (he just trimmed it last week.

Hi Ira
Would have posted some build pics but my daughter got to the camera first!! However as you can see the model is coming on well. The red bell crank operates the choke on the DA85. Started putting some detail on! Going to be "The Jacky C 2nd"
How is your coming on?
Cheers
Phil

With exception of working out tailwheel retract system, nothing mch has happened here since last post. Project has been on summer hold while I have spent a lot of time flying. So you are way ahead of me and looking good.

Guess Ill start thinking about it again in the next month or two as flying season ends.
