Hey Guys,
I just purchased a H-9 Sundowner. After giving it much thought I went with the pumped version of the Saito 220 for power. Reason being, from what I have been reading, the Evo 35 still has some issues to work out in that particular airframe. The saito has the approximate weight of the Evo 26, and the comparable (if not a bit more) power of the 35GT thus the reason for choosing the Saito. Does any one out there have any "real world" info on the Sundowner/Saito 220 combination. Happy New Year to all my RC friends, and God Bless. Thanks, Joe |

What issues have you read regarding the Evo35GT and the Sundowner? I was considering that combo.
The only experience I have with the Sundowner was one with a OS160 in the nose. It was pretty slow. |

Hi DUBD,
One problem encountered is one of cooling. It was suggested to block of the right cheek opening in the cowl to force air over the cylinder head, and cutting an oppening directly under the head that is approx. 2X`s larger that the openning in the cheek. Second, it seems some guys needed to losen the carb and slightly twist it to clear the cowel. Personally, I would go with the 26GT becuse it considerably loweres the wing loading thus significantly improving the flying characteristics of the plane. Besides, we are only talking about a 10-15mph difference between them. Also, from what I am being told (and reading) the 26GT with a pipe will pretty much stay with the 35GT powered planes while handling a heck of a lot better. If I were going to go with gas, I would go with a ZDZ 40. It`s closer in weight to the 26GT and will out perform the 35GT. I just happen to love the Saito 4strokes and couldn`t resist trying the Zeus. The pumped 2.20 Zeus on 30% Heli fuel with a good after market exhaust system should "spank" just about any thing that could be put in the Downer, execpt for possibly a Moki 2.10 which is considerably heavier (which is why I didn`t go with one). Good luck, and happy New Year to you and yours! Joe Last edited by Joetach; 01-02-2008 at 07:30 PM. Reason: Wrong info on the size of the hot air openning under the Cyl. head |

I am guessing you are reading the h9 thread here and have seen my set up. if not i have a stock 220 in mine and hit the 146 mark rich on about the 2nd or 3rd gallon.
stock 220 has the 180 carb and gives me greef on low end. what prop are you spinning? I hit 146 with 16x14apc last year. have gone to a 16x13 and its for sure faster but for mellew cruising around the small carb is always lean just 1/3 to 1/2 and it still about 110-120 and ends up flaming out if i stay under half power for to long. the big bore carb is what i need to fix mine but i just use the 16x14 and land with the onboard glow on. |
