I've looked around a while and can't seem to find any definitive answer on the difference between the Yak 54 and Yak 55 models. I've been looking for a new 50cc class plane... seems like everybody loves the Yak 54's these days, but what makes them better/different from the 55?

54's are two seat planes and 55's are single seat.

nothing else? No difference in wing/stab relative position (a la Extra 260 mid wing vs 300/330 lower wing), or airfoil difference, or wing shape difference?

The Yak 55sp is a modified version of the Yak 55m. It is completely different than the Yak 54. Different main wing placement, single place cockpit, longer turtle deck, different stab location and different rudder. There are only two 50cc Yak 55sp's available right now that I know of. The Composite ARF for $699 and the DawghouseRC ARF for $379. If you want something different the 55sp is it.

I do like the looks of the 55 better, but my primary purpose with it is 3d. I think I might be best off to look for a 54 then from the sounds of it.
My first giant scale plane was the Hangar 9 27% Extra 260. Much too heavy for only 1100 square inches of wing. I have a hard time with that plane. Likes to drop a wing if it gets slow, harriers have lots of wing rock and I just don't have any confidence with it. Buddy of mine has the PAU Yak 54 and it seems to just float by comparison. I was trying to save a few bucks and go with the dawghouse Yak 55, but sounds like I should spend the extra $$ and go for a Yak 54. |

Too clarify, the 55 was set up for IMAC while the 54 was set up for 3-d. Change in cg location is what would have been needed. Wayne Geoffen 3d'd both models without difficulty and noted that the 55sp was just set up diffrently at the time.
Both planes should 3d well, Scott

Seriously consider the Extreme Flight Yaks... The build quality is outstanding and Chris knows how to design them so they fly light. If you want to get an idea of how the EF yak flies you can click on the link

Did you ever get info on this? I'm in the same boat -- ready to buy but would love to know the major flying differences between the 54 and the 55. If youŗe an aspiring 3D pilot, which one will suit you better?
Maybe the answer is "either one".... that would make it easy. Just choose the coolest colors ![]() Thoughts? or conclusion? |
