Hey oilsands. No i ahvent glued the canopy on. Reson being I might put in an instrument panel and pilot in. This is easier. What i did find is that there is a small opening in the front. So im going to have to use some yellow tape to seel it down temporarily. Im going to use a 24oz dubro for my smoke. I thinkt he cables that came with the plane are the steel ones.

On my 43% I didn't glue the canopy. I used the hex screws and then 1/4 inch clear tape around the edges. Just a thought. Dave |

SMOKE ON HARV !!!
Yes, Harv get some pics up of your canister install. Scott - you need to burn midnight oil. I got my h9 35% extra done in 2 days, test flown the 3rd and flying in richland the 4th and 5th. Get 'R' Done !! Scott - if you are good at working with tiny things - you could consider making your own servo extensions. It's really pretty easy - just a little time consuming. then you have nice clean wiring installations - I made all of my own wiring and my own "virtual power expander" and still got it done in 2 days. ha - not really my advice - I was getting so tired and delirious after all that - but it was worth it and I'd do it again if I physically could. I second the notion of rear mounted servos - I like 'em that way. |

Thanks guys. I read the manual online and if I recall correctly, it mentions to screw them on and that one can use glue as well if they wanted. I think screws would be fine, plus you can remove the canopy after if ever needed. Nice idea about the clear tape on the edges.

Major,
When you make your extensions, do you make them the same length (example: outside aileron on right 10" and left 10", then inside aileron right 5" and left 5") or make them each to their own length to fit?

I do like you said - each opposite but same location servo would get the same length servo wire, with just a little bit extra for weasling around the receiver... since my receivers are usually centered or close to center in the fuse that works well enough. A NAPA auto parts store near me had the pin crimper for 8 bucks - my hobby shop had it for about 18.
What I hated was buying the servo extension lengths mentioned in manuals and never having them right... either too long or too short - or worse... not even available at the hobby shop which would delay the project or mean endless driving around hunting for servo extensions. Making them myself - though it takes a few mintues each I think is well worth it. Next build I do - I think I'm going to just solder the extensions right to the servo leads and heat shrink them up. I'm guessing this will be a really reliable joint... and take about the same time as crimping the ends on wires and stuffing them into the little plastic plugs. Many ways to skin a cat. |

I make my own extensions as well and do the way that you do (matching sides). I think this time I will add onto the servo wire (remove the connector and solder the extension). I think it give a neater setup, more reliable (no connection to have a problem with) and chance for increased resistance, plus save a little weight and money.

I personally prefer to solder my extensions on as well. I shrink wrap each wire before the larger one.

----No quick build for this guy......slow and steady wins the IMAC contest:fencing: I think I will make up my own extensions, unless a factory length fits puurrfect.......looks like a rainy weekend coming up.......I'm sure I'll get a bunch done-----waiting for servos/JR matchboxes to arrive(next week) Looking for the right pilot figure for this plane-----no helmut head----realistic looking and light as possible----any ideas guys.

Right on Herve - that looks like the best way to go. I kinda slapped myself after my build because I thought of doing that just about right after it was all done.
So I don't think I'm going to dig back into it but for sure next time I'll be soldering mine. Also - I did a ton of soldering on this last build. If anyones thinking of a way to save a buck and equipment and weight... Also I really like this way of doing my wing connections in the fuse. I used deans 4 wire mini plugs - and made basically a fancy Y cable from each of my wings. A 3 wire deans would have been fine. I joined the 2 signal wires (since I program each servo individually), then I can plug each wing into just one servo channel (one tiny bit simpler for radio setup - especially if you're short on channels). the black and red power wires go into the deans plug as well. on the receiver side the deans plug connects the signal wire into the receiver and the power goes directly to the back side of a power switch... so.... on this power switch it has heavier leads (I had 16 gauge so I used it - 18 would be fine I'm sure but I haven't seen that in the silicone wire) going to the receiver side of the deans plug for the wing servos, and also a 20 gauge lead that plugs into the receiver for power. Thus the wing servos get power directly and cancel the need for a power expander - and you get a nice deans tight connection for each wing. I repeated this for the other wing, so each wing gets power directly from a power switch, and each power switch powers the receiver - so the elevator and rudder servos (3 total in my case) plus the throttle servo get their power through the receiver. I dont' think 4 servos is a heavy load on the receiver that has 2 power leads to it at all. This combined with the use of A-123's and my airplane is devoid of a pair of power regulators and a power expander - since my DA engine can handle the voltage of a 2 cell A-123 there's no ignition regulator either - I figure it saves about $300 bucks in the build process. Programming hitecs isn't the most fun thing to do but if you take the time it works really well. wow - sorry I typed so much. what was I thinking. |

Scott - I don't see this done much but I came up with the idea (I'm sure I wasn't first) to use a photograph (of my daughter) as my pilot.
A friend of mine took it a good step further - he took a profile picture and mirror imaged it - and glued this profile picture onto some 6mm depron foam. Since it's a mirror image the profile matches on both sides. He then made some triangle stock on the bottom edge of the foam pilot figure to increase the mounting surface and glued it in place. It weighs absolutely nothing and because it's photographic it really looks better from the sides than anything plastic, fiberglass or rubber. The other nice thing - you can shrink or enlarge your photograph to exactly what size you need for your plane and it costs nearly zilch point cockroach. |

Hey guys, sorry for not much updates. I never got any work done yesterday. But i did manage to finish up one wing panel.(well. not 100%) I temporarily installed the servos and everything, and started programming them. I used the JR matchbox, so it took me like 10 minutes. Everything is really crisp. There is over 45* of through. Im gonna start the other wing later on tonight. Im gonna try and get more done tommorow. Dads machnining me some 1-1/4 inch standoffs so ill get the motor mounted hopefully tommorow. Im gonna try to plan out cannister installation tommorow and hopefully have them installed by sunday. Once that is done, I will be peicing the elctrical stuff together thoughout the week and then i will hopefully maiden it on saturday of next week.
happy halloween
