Are you running smoke on this one I see two tanks in there, or are you just planning a really long maiden? |

Judging from his switches, I'd say smoke.... same side by side setup I used (the tanks).

First.......yes this plane will have smoke eventually. Right now I don't have a pump but I set it up with the tank and switches already
Bad news. Spent 1/2 the day trying to get the carb mounted. Seems one of the bolts stripped. Finally got that going and then we tried to start the motor and do some tuning. It started once then we couldn't get it going again. Much later we found out the Ignition battery was 100% dead. Not showing anything on the 8-ball. Swapped it out and it started right up. Did just a touch of needle tweaking. Put everything back together and then programmed the ailerons. Went to take off and right after I got airborne the motor started to bog down. It sounded like it was just about to come back to life but then it died at maybe 50 feet up and hardly any airspeed. Down into the marsh it went. Cowl is toast Prop is gone (CF spinner and backplate are untouched though!) Gear plate ripped out small holes in the wings from the wheel pants (just sheeting and covering) Carb block cracked (was going to buy a new one anyone but now I have to) Some tears in the bottom fuse on the covering. Nothing a new cowl and a little work won't fix. Cans are coming out and I'll be going back to straight mufflers. The cub flew good today though.

Sorry about the dead stick. I had a similar thing happen to me my first time around 20 some years ago on a maiden. Had a flame out on a then brand new contraption called a YS 120 four stroke on initial climb out. Broke the fuse in half. Two weeks later I had the best flying plane that I flew up until that point. It was a Sig Cub. Boy have we come a long way.
Good luck on the rebuild. Looking forward to the re maiden. PS: My Current Cub flew great today also. |

Thanks everyone. I got the plane in the shop and removed the engine. Flipped it over and removed alot of covering (all silver). Then I removed all the wood that broke. It actually wasn't damaged too bad. I think I can have it fixed in a few days of work and some extra ply.
Noticed my freshly painted wheel pants were damaged as well. Gotta fix those as well. Def need a new cowl though. I'll be calling tomorrow for that.

Yeah, that was a bummer!! Hate to see that happen!!
I did get two flights on mine though, shaking the winter cobwebs off felt good! Forgot how good this baby flies! All in all it was a beautiful day. Sam will have it fixed up soon and will be wringing it out soon enough.

It sucked watching you fly yours while I chased demons all day.

Sorry to hear of the trouble you had. Hope you get her fixed up quickly and get her back in the air for a more successful maiden.

Ouch Sam, sorry to hear that! I hate it when the gear on a plane starts acting up. Yuck. Hope you can get it all fixed up and flying again soon!
