Next inline tonight is to prep the rudder for installation. The control surfaces use EPP Light weight Control Horns. The first step in this process is to find the slots in the rudder. If you run your fingers over the rudder you can feel the slots. Use an Xacto to cut the covering away on both sides. Once I had the covering removed I used a 1/16" drill bit and a dremel to carve out the slots. Now that I have opened up the channel it was time to trial fit the rudder horns. In order to align the horns up to evenly have 1.5" on each side I used a cut off wheel to trim 4 MM from each horn. Once this was done I measured twice and applied CA to each side. In order to make this clean I used blue painter tape around each horn.

After a long week of work I finally started working on the Edge again today. I left off earlier in the week with the Rudder by installing the control horns. The 29% Air Wild planes use CA hines by Radio South. I measured the hinge to mark it for install. I used a couple drops of CA to hold each hinge in place in order to mount the rudder to the fuse. Once everything lined up correctly I saturated each hinge with thin CA. When the CA cured I gave the rudder a good tug, she is solid. Flipped the fuse over to go ahead and fit the sullivan tail wheel. Pretty straight forward step to mount this tail wheel. I did use Great Planes nylon strap to secure the spring as suggested by Air Wild.

I received a package from Air Wild this week, in it was my new JR 9303 2.4 transmitter and some parts to complete this build...there are a few props, Smart Fly FO kill switch, B&B Master Tank and fuel tubing.

It is time to get this bird up on its on wheels. I am using all the hardware recommended in the assembly manual. First step is to install the axles on the landing gear. The wheel pants are pretty simple to install, first I opened up the hole slightly for the axle. The easiest way to install the wheels and wheel pants are to invert the plane. First slide the wheel pants on then the inside wheel collar, wheel and outside wheel collar. Once this took place flip it back over right side up. I propped the tail up to get the wheel pants parallel to the table. Double check the wheel pants and use a wood screw with some washers as spacers to secure it to the landing gear.

The plane is looking great. Love that DA fuel dot! After a few flights on my AW EX260, I removed the spring on my Sullivan tailwheel, drilled out the hole and used a straight piece of 1/16" piano wire running through a piece of small fuel tubing (also strapped as recommended for the spring). Seems to provide more direct control over ground handling for my taste. What electronics/power distribution system are you planning? Any battery redundancy? |

see e oh to answer your question on battery redundancy... No, however having 2 inputs to the receiver to increase the power will help out more than just having a standard battery connection in. Is this true redundancy no, bc I still have one battery, one switch, and one regulator. I imagine on a 50 CC size plane this is sufficient enough to power this platform. Moving on to the ignition: I am running a FromeCo 7.4 2600 LiIon w/JR output to a HD hitec switch on to a basic FromeCo regulator. From the regulator it feeds a Smart Fly FO kill switch to control the DA 50 Ignition module. |

So today was one of the nicer days we have had in a few weeks. I head out to the local flying field this afternoon only to realize the weather wasn't that great. Hung out for a few hours doing the norm... talkin airplanes. Decided to return home and jump back into the Edge build. I picked up today with installing the new B&B 16 oz Master Tanks fuel cell. I love the felt clunk on these tanks. Assembly was a breeze. Following the instructions that came with the tank it was finished in roughly 5-10 minutes. To complete the rest of the plumbing I am using AeroTrend fuel tubing. For the vent line I ran it to the back of the tank back to the front and drilled a hole in the bottom of the fuse to drop it out. Fill Line is capped off with a DA Fuel Dot on the right side of the fuse. Finishing off the plumbing I am using a H9 inline fuel filter just before the carb.

I love those master tanks also. I will never bother with another type again. My dad has an in at the company that makes the acutal containers so I have any size or shape option made.

When I got home from work this evening, I jumped right into working on the Edge again. Tonight I was able to get the Horizontal stabs completed and installed. Using the same procedure for the rudder, I carefully cut away the covering over the indentions of each piece. Using the dremel with a 1/16" drill bit I carved away to allow the EPP Control Horns the clearance they need. After measuring 4 or 5 times and checking the alignment using a control horn it was time to CA them in place. This step is identical to the rudder install with the exception of trimming the horns, it is not required for the elevator halfs.

Here are a few pictures of the horizontal stabs just before gluing the elevator to the stab. Mounting them to the fuse is pretty straight forward and easy. Each half is secured to the fuse using 2 - M3X15 socket head screws and M3 flat washers.

This is it for the night, couple last shots showing the horizontal stabs in place! It is coming along pretty well. I will get the wings done tommorow night and then it is a matter of waiting on servos. They should be here any day this week.

Started on the wings tonight, was able to get the left wing done. I will work on the other wing tommorow afternoon. The procedures for the wings are the same as the elevator halves. The only modification I made is I cut 1/8" off of the EPP horns. After they were trimmed, I used a square and level to make sure the hole lined up with the hinge line. Everything checked out, applied the thin CA waited for it to cure and moved on to the aileron installation. Just like the elevators, measured the hinges to find the half and CA'd them in the aileron. Fitted the aileron to the wing and saturated the CA hinges. More to follow tommorow!

Here are a few more pictures of setting up and installing the ailerons. I used the Angle Pro to make sure the aileron was level in order to get an accurate measurement for glueing the EPP control horns. This ensured that the horns were perpendicular to the surface and dead on with the hinge line.
