Default Extra 300 elevator hinge line

As some of you know, I have been working on a DALTON 300 for some time now. It is not a difficult build, just life getting busy. Great kit.

I have set all my incidences and have my rudder mounted and hinged. I am ready to cut the stabs. Here is where my question comes in.

I would think that the hinge line would be parallel to the stab tube. I used the factory stab base plate that is laser cut and stock mounting that is VERY secure and accurate btw. The plans show that the half inch pieces that make the hinge line go from being flush with the root cap and out to a point on the tip of the stab. If I do that, it will put a slight taper back to the hinge line (3/16) or so from the root to the tip. If I go from the back edge of the root cap to the tips parallel to the stab tube, the tip side of the elevator will grow and the tap area of the stab will shrink by that amount. I used a laser to look at this. I leveled the stab tube and mounted the stabs to it so I could project an accurate line.

Is the plane designed this way? I do not see how I could have built any extra taper into the stabs. the phelolics set the location of the root cap. The shaping process for the leading edge was done with care so as to not remove much material from the thickness of the front cap. (about 1/32) The cores were not sanded and the overall outline of the stab is almost exact to the printed plans. (this information is for those that would wonder about the accuracy of the build) I have matched the stabs to eachother and they are almost a perfect match stood on tip or cap.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance. This is holking me up now as I am running out of "other things" to work on. WooHoo, it will not be long now.

I edited this to add DALTON to the text of the post. You could see it was on the Dalton forum, but I realize that not everyone navigates that way.

Not sure what kit you're working on but every one I've seen has the elev hinge line parallel to the tube. Full scale is straight across (perpendicular to the A/C centerline) too. - Mike

Thanks Mike. I updated my post to make it easier to see it was a DALTON.

Straight makes sense to me but I have seen pattern ships with a little taper to them over the years. I am just wanting to be sure.

I have built a few of the Dalton's and this is how I have done it. I put both stabs on the tubes (not on the airframe) and lay them out on a flat surface. The ply plate is the starting point that I use for my first cut. Take a straight edge that will go the length of both stabs, lay it accross the stabs starting at the trailing edge of the plywood plate. Even out the tips, left and right stab, and mark a line. Second line is 1" lower (toward the trailing edge). Mark the line and make your cuts. I should mension this, first make sure that both stabs measure out identical, length, width, hieght etc..

Put both stabs on the tube. Measure 3" back from the leading edge of the foam at the tip where the 1/2" balsa Leading edge is glued on.Take a straight edge and draw a line across. Then measure back another inch and draw another line. Cut this area out.

Can you place the stab on top of the plans and transfer the hing line to the stab ?

Thanks Tony. Straight seemed to make the most sense but I wanted to ask. Most people I asked would just have cut it straight. I guess there are always the retentive guys in the group.....

I have never found that to be really accurate. Trying to transfer a two dimensional drawing onto a three dimensional part accurately. That is why the measurements or just ?cut them straight" was what I was after. I am done with my hinges now and can get 46 degrees of throw with about a 1/64 gap at the hinge line.
