I decided to build a large electric last year and started a search for a suitable plane. It needed to be light and capable of extreme 3D. I talked to Sean Plummer over at Hacker Brushless and he confirmed they had a bulletproof 50cc size power system. It made the choice easy as Chris Hinson has a winner in the 88 inch Yak. FlightPower jumped in with suitable batteries 4900 6S X 2. The plane will be equipped with 9156 Futaba servos.
First thing I did was to install Robart hinges and glue n the horns. As you can see I got a little help from FastFord

Next item was the wheels and gear. I soldered a washer on the tail gear and took the whole thing apart. I ground flat spots on the shafts and loctited the grub screws. I then glued in the wood supports for the spats and fit them to the gear

. Next was to remove the pipe tunnel and install the rudder setup. I also opened up some cooling holes while it was upside down. Also note the replacement stainless screws I used.

I put in all the servos. I also started making all the extensions. I also installed avionics sheathing where there might be abrasion.

It was time to start installing the electrics. I installed the Hacker Spin 99 speed control. 99 amps of current handling sexiness! It can be programmed either by the radio or I chose the spin box that not only programs the SC; but records flight data like max and min volts, amps, rpm, temp, and other useful info.

Trent,
Are you going with a Hacker A60-18L? Hacker A100 would be nice but a a larger weight gain. Tim |

Next thing I wanted to address was installing the canopy. I know it's no big deal to pull 2 bolts to get the canopy off, but.........I can't leave anything alone, so I decided to make a quick release latch assembly like I built for my 3.3 Comp-Arf Yak. This plane would add an extra challenge since the clear part of the canopy is already installed. I started off by cutting out some 1/4 plywood supports and some 1/64 plywood to reinforce the plastic sides.backup plates. I started off by using epoxy to glue in the 1/64th to the sides, next I glued in the blocks to support the rods. I then turned the canopy and drilled throught the back with a long 1/8 drill bit. next step was to cut the brass tubes that would guide the music wire. I also make sure to rough up the brass before I glued in the tubes. I then cut slots in the canopy for the slides. , replace the grub screw with a 4-40 This is where it got tricky. I took the 3/32 music wire and filed it to a sharp point. Then insert it into the tubes, place a 3/32 wheel collar on it using a 4-40 bolt in place of the grub screw and install the canopy. I then pushed the wire back to mark the fuselage. Next step was to drill the fuse and glue in the brass tube the pin will fit into. After getting it to work smoothly, I built plywood boxes around the tubes and potted in the tube with 30 minute epoxy with milled fiber. 1 last thing is to install ball point pen springs on the shafts to hold the latches closed. Now I have immediate access to my batteries.

Do you have an estimate of what the finished weight will be and what kind of thrust/weight ratio you'll end up with?
Thanks!

I am so stealing that quick canopy latch idea.
Good to see somebody else using 9156s in one of these, Hinson said nobody has ever asked about SWB arms to fit Futaba from him (although mine's an Extra, not a Yak). |
