Hey, thanks for the hatch latch. Here it is with the cockpit installed, plus some other pics from the shop ;-)

Mark,

Did you happen to get any watt/amp readings on your setup?

Great to hear your maiden and additional flights went well for you.

Looks like you should be able to get an easy 8-9 mins. of flight time on your packs.

The latch looks great! I fully tested mine today and it performed flawlessly. Also very nice clocks and lights, of course I'm alittle partial towards the BL

Well I was able to make it out to watch Mark Maiden the E-Yak. I was really impressed with the install and the performance. It will be quite the treat once Mark gets a couple of cycles on the batteries and can wring it out. I took along my trusty Canon and snapped a couple of pics. Hope ya'll enjoy! The weather was less than ideal for photography (I don't have my $1700 lens that I want).

I'm still figuring out the Jeti box and it didn't record the amp readings. I'm gonna ck my other meter and see if it goes high enough for this plane. I agree that flight times will eventually be in the 8-9 minute range. I will have it at Nall along with the rest of the fleet this year!

I also wanted to mention I used a Futaba 7C 2.4 Fasst radio system in this plane. It worked flawlessly. Very easy to setup the dual elevator servos and I have triple rates on one switch.....sweet.

Nice pics. Cracky!!

I seen Ryan Archer fly one of these out at the AEF event last month w/ a Hacker setup and it flew AWESOME. I'm pretty sure it was on the A60-18L, not sure though.

The red color scheme on the Yak definately presents well in the air. It's great to see some well know giant scale guys getting into large electric flight.

Mark,

This is great. I appreciate all the info. I am following in your steps on this. Its my first big plane...and I am excited. I have some IMAC contests I want to hit here in California soon.

Question: What did you do for a Mechanical safety switch for the Motor?

Thanks,

Richard

Richard,
I didn't put in a mechanical safety because of the the way I did the hatch, I didn't feel it was neccesary. I can remove the hatch in a second. I also have my radio programmed with a throttle kill that disables the throttle stick. If you feel the need you can put a deans connector in series.

Time for an update. I flew 4 more flights on it today and tried a couple of different props. I started the testing with a Mejlik 22X12WE and to be blunt, it sucked. Lots of noise and straight lines were ok but uplines were sluggish to put it mildly. I tried to hover it but it barely maintained altitude at full throttle. I then switched to the XOAR 23X10 electric prop. I couldn't tell any difference from the mejlik. Noisey and no power. I put the 24X10 APC back on and it was game on baby. Torque rolling on the deck with decent punchout. It's not like a foamy but enough to instill plenty of confidence. As the weather gets warmer and the batteries become broken in the power will increase.

Landing is a lttle tricky as you need to maintain a little power coming in. It definitely takes getting used to. The plane is a blast to fly, I get so pissed when the timer goes off and I have to land. I will be glad to get the batteries broken in so I can flail on it without mercy!!! I'm limiting my flight times to 4.5 minutes until I have 5 flights on each pack. I'm also limiting the full throttle puchouts.

This is a very viable package with a good balance of power and aerobatic performance. My Faast radio system is working flawlessly. I switched the plane over to my 14MZ but retained the 7 channel receiver. The 14MZ gives you the choice of the 14 channel multi system or the 7 channel. I'm digging it to say the least. It is nice to have your equipment work so well so you can concentrate on flying.

I wish I could say the same for my Sony Video camera. It DOA right now. I wanted to shoot some video today and it just layed down on me. I need to decide to have it fixed again or just go buy a new one. I've had so many problems with it I haven't shot much video over the last year. I think Chad might have shot some video today but he left before I switched back to the APC prop. Hopefully next weekend we'll get some video

Mark,

If you want some better pull out of hover I would recommend a APC 24 x 12E or a APC 25 x 12.5E.

I've talked with Sean from Hacker and he highly recommends both. The 25" might be the ticket on your Yak as you will have plenty of ground clearance to accommodate it.

The 24X12E APC is what is on it now, definitely best performance so far. I will order the 25X12E tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

Mark...Thanks for the update. Your advice is great. I am plodding along with my idential Yak...getting the Power Box installed, etc. I have the Hacker installed. I sure hope this plane isn't marginal on the power. You said you can hover...at 60 or 70% power setting?

I went the JR R921...with a 2nd Satellite RX. I also installed the Spektrum Flight Data Recorder...so I can review the radio reception. I liked your air scoop add-on...so I built that too. I just didn't put the cool labels on it! :-)

Thanks,

Richard

I'm glad it's coming along. I would rethink a powerbox on a plane this size especially with trying to keep the weight at a mininum. 60-70% is accurate on the hover setting. The air scoop was Dave Jones idea, he's da pimp.
