I Would like to know if any of you have built a test stand for your gas engines!! Other than bolting it to your picknic table
I know mounting it on your plane is an option but for me i wanna run my 3W 70 b2 first to see if it's the motor i want to install in my plane...before i go cutting holes every where thanks in advance!! mannyh

I made this one up several years ago. It's had a couple dozen 150's strapped to it a time or two....

That looks like a great design, Walt. I'll bet you could sell a kit for that thing, or sell them ready-made, and make a mint on it.

Hey Walt.
I reckon that would get the neighbours honking if you fired it up at 7:30am on Sundays. Nice looking device. I have some of my guys working on a proper water brake dyno for RC gas engines. It will take a few months to get finished and running but I see it as the only way we will ever get to see what Hp these engines really develop and at what RPM. Once we get the blanks cut out and start machining this thing up I will share it with you all. There are some minor hiccups in the first set of drawings but perseverance will sort them out. Kiwi |

Thanks for the reply's guys. This stand has been a very handy thing to have around here. Its had to many engines fired on it to count. I copied it from a picture (don't remember where) but I made it to look like the picture. Its cut from 3/4 CDX...I think I got $22.00 in it plus the can and an old bench battery I had laying around the shop. A 150 wont budge it with the 2 brick. Nothing seems to vibrate it either. With each different engine I make a new plate which bolts to the stand, out of 3/4 ply also. Thanks Walt

Walt,
What kind (size) of fasteners are you using to attach the vertical members to the base? What did you finish it with?

Hey Nick: It's good to see ya here guy....The whole thing is screwed together with standard deck screws 2-1/2inch. I used carpenter "yellow" glue everywhere its screwed. The paint is just Latex outside enamel. Just some extra that was in a can in the garage...Walt

Well, I didn't know if you were the same Walt, but the quality of your work sure looked familiar.
I'm telling you Walt, you need to kit this thing, or at least sell plans for it. I'd sure love to have one of these.

If I had a digi cam, I would take a pic. I have a pair of triangles made from thick angle stock about 14" high, the steel is over 1/8" thick, and have a piece of 3/4 ply bolted to the 90deg side for engine mounting about 10in from the bottom to leave room for cans. I have the rest of the stuff mounted to a piece of ply that is mounted to the backside of the triangles The whole unit is screwed down to the top of a tree stump with huge 3" wood screws.

Hello all... first post here!
I've attached a few pictures I got in an E-Mail from Mike Dooly at RCS. Below are his words. Mike wrote me in response to a thread on another forum.
It's now BADLY fuel soaked and has been retired. My latest is about the same dimensions but made from steel. Here's a little vid. and a few pictures. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygLLE9wypoA Bill Vail www.RCScreenProtectors.com Last edited by wjvail; 06-25-2007 at 08:54 AM. |
