OK folks, sorry if this sounds so basic but I'm having a heck of a time. I'll be flying the Sportsman sequences until I can get this down pat.
I 'm having one heck of a time getting the 90 degree roller down in the 08 IMAC Intermediate sequence. For those that have not seen this, it is a 90 degree turn, inverted with one roll during the turn I know it's all in the timing but I cannot seem to nail down the start of the turn and roller at the same time. I guess the problem is what control to start with. I'm looking for a complete explanation through the whole thing. Assume the turn is both ways and any and all help is welcome

Well you've probably heard this already but burn fuel! But there are a few techniques that help. Practice nice long slow rolls in a straight line first until it becomes second nature. Then you'll find as you change the timing on your elevator and rudder inputs you can turn the plane at the same time. A simulator is a huggge help with rollers as well. Really there's nothing more too it than practice and timing. Keep in mind it is a very low K factor Manoeuvre so don't get hung up on it.

I start with the rudder first. It will get the plane moving in the direction it needs to go, then basically roll through it using the elev and rudder to keep the plane on track. Lot harder than it looks. I am not good at it, and I never got over an 8 on last year's Intermediate roller, and that one was upright.

re-read the post.....
![]() I start with the Ail and same rudder at the same time and then follow with the ele... timing... and a crap load of crashes on the sim first!! When I tried it the first time (I'm just moving up) I held my breath, but it really wasn't that bad.... it is far from the hardest thing in the sequence......

I'm ready to move up except for being able to nail this down and yep, it's a 45 degree, my bad ![]() I know I have the time and me being the perfectionist I am, low "K" or not I want to at least score well on it so any tips/tricks is what I was after

I agree with ChrisBchips, Work on those slow rolls, then work on them from upright. I agree with Vic as well, I lead in the the rudder first, just slightly from inverted because it will be bottom rudder as you roll more, after leading in, backing off the rudder, transitioning to down elevator, and top rudder, continuing to steer the turn with top rudder through the upright portion of the roller, continuing on to rudder transition for the second half. Also, one huge part with rollers, and it may sound remedial, make sure your airplane is 100% dialed in for your pitch coupling to the rudder inputs. For example, if your airplane pushes to the gear when rudder is applied, you are going to be fighting it evertime the belly is out on that roller when you have rudder inputs in, vice versa if it pulls to the canopy. While your learning them, make it easier on your self and mix out any pitch coupling. I like to start mixing out my pitch coupling (if any) by doing flat turns on my roller rates and making adjustments as needed.

No, it is not a 45 degree roller, I don't think there is such a thing. It is a 1/4 turn (that is 90 degrees), one roll in turn, from inverted to inverted.
If flying the roller from the left (that would mean the sequence is being flown right to left) 1.) Give a little right rudder to start the plane turning left (remember you are inverted) 2.) Release the right rudder as you begin to input Left Aileron, and down elevator 3.) As the plane begins to come into knife edge, reduce the elevator input, hold the aileron input steady, and add left rudder to keep the nose level. 4.) As the plane continues to roll to level upright, slowly reduce the left rudder, add up elevator, keep the aileron constant. (this should feel like a normal left turn at this point 5.) As the plane passes through knife edge again, slowly add right rudder, reduce the up elevator, and keep the aileron constant 6.) As the plane nears inverted again, slowly reduce the aileron, add just enough down elevator to keep the nose level, hold light right rudder just long enough to correct the heading to the right line. Your done. It reads much more difficult than it is. Really it will become a rhythm thing with some practice. Learn it on the sim, fly it on a foamy until you are comfortable, then take it to the big plane. Hope this helps! |
