Looking at these radios. I ordered a 14MZ, but was wondering if the 14MZ users think its worth the added cost over the 12Z? Thanks.

but that is just me.... it is INSANE what you can do with this thing... and how easy it is to do it... it takes a bit different thought process... but once past it... wow

Some would say yes.
And others would agree.

Those are honest answers. For me the tunes are pretty much worthless, but I do like the color touch screen and the pictures. Other than that, for me it offers little over the 12. Had the 12 been out when I bought the 14, it would have been a harder choice to make.

I think it depends on what you need and how much do you have to spend. I bought a 12FG, but I could've gotten a new and unused 14MZ from a friend. I'm in graduate school so I like to watch what I spend. In the end, I decided I didn't need a color screen or the ability to play music. I like the way the 12FG feels a little better and it's lighter. Now, if I could've gotten both for the same price, I probably would have gone with the 14MZ. However, the question you need to ask yourself is if the extra $1000 is worth the features the 14MZ offers over the 12Z.

These are my thoughts, 14MZ all the way!
I need 11+ channels, so each servo has it's own channel. NO matchboxes ever needed! BIG SAVING $$ here. Servo linkages are dead nuts on with a little adjustment. Very easy to set up 1 to 3 servos on one control surface. No servo buzzing or fighting anymore. Did I turn it on? Very flexible curves-points on the throws. Mixing function are more than I ever need. It has more programming functions than I ever need, so I will not want later. Still finding more as I use. Music, so so. Assign sound to switches etc NICE. hit the wrong switch and it tells you what you hit. Just starting to use this one. Here is my vote. Color screen + touch screen, VERY easy to input values and functions. SWEET! Ease of setting up a model, extremely easy and fast. In 94 I bought a 9ZHPS for $1450, it is STILL going strong, LOT's of time-use on it. In Aug 06 I bought the 14MZ, 78+ hours of use on it so far,not counting the 9ZHPS time. In Dec 07 I bought the 2.4module set for the 14MZ. As I handed over the hundred $ bills, I was debating am I going to regret this? Well, I DO NOT regret doing it. I hope to have a long life with the 14MZ-14MZ-2.4 I am glad I did it over the 12MZ, the touch screen inputs are so much nicer than the switches- roller knobs-dials. This along for me is worth it. I think down the road for cost verses function-ease of use. The 2K spread out over 10+ years= ~$18 per month, I drink that much in soda's. |

Thanks for all the imput. I gues I have buyers remorse at the moment. Once I have it in hand and start using it, it will probably go away.. I too will need the extra channels as my planes are getting larger and more complex.

Is the body of the 14mz made of plastic or alloy?

For me it was not worth it. I have had my 12Z since the day they were release, it is an outstanding radio. The 12Z has the same number of channels as the 14mz.
I can give up the color screen, the voice commands, the mp3 player, 32 character names, and mixer memory and pocket the $700.

You can't go wrong with either one. I have the 14MZ and wouldn't trade it for any other radio.

I have had both the 12 and 14 radios.
Over a year of flying, I used both radios. I always felt more comfortable with the 12Z in my hands. For me, it was just the way the sticks and switches are positioned that I like the feel of the 12 better. Reminds me of the 9Z allot. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the 14, Great radio, but after doing my own evaluation of both, I am now using the 12Z full time and don't regret it decesion to sell the 14. Just felt after going through both programs side by side, I was able to give up the very few differences the 14 has in the programing. Do yourself a favor and get to hold of and feel each in you own hands and see how they feel. To me, there IS a difference. I am happy with the 12...Totally.

I have both...I love both! Programming is very similar. The point is you can do pretty much anything you want as far as programming with these radios. The 14 feels really good and the touch screen is incredible. The flexability in the radio is beyond all others. You can change anything to suit your needs.
What is really nice is that you can take a picture of your plane, and load it into the radio and not only have the name of the plane, but the picture too. The reason thats nice is because if you have a great number of planes some of which may be two very close in name, the picture eliminates any confusion. If you want a radio you dont want to replace every two years, buy the 14 and just "Update" it when the updates are available, make it 2.4 or 72.....you can have the best of both worlds. This radio is an investment that will give you many years of service. Blair
