I recently purchased a Great Planes Extra 330L, i am now putting in my radio equipment and the two hobby shops that i use frequently along with my flying buddies have Huge differences on what to use as far as RX all the way down to the Batteries. my Current set up that i have is, servos i am using JR ST125MG which are 142Oz/Torque at 6v. Rx is JR9ch pcm-s (NER-649S) and the battery is JR 2700 converted into a 5 cell setup to get me my 6Volts. also i am using a matchbox configuration with the aileron set up and looking to pick up a powerbox.
Now for my question, being new to the scale of Giants will the servos i chose be too weak to make the airplane a solid airplane to learn aerobatics and basic skills of a newcomer to giantscale. With the usage of a 6v battery system does that need to go into a powerbox system to ensure that i will have a constant flow of 6v to my servos and use a 4.8battery on my reciever. And the last is i have been told two seperate things about the rx, one is that the reciever i got will not work as it is not capable of dual conversion, and two that by plugging a 6v battery into the reciever i could possibly shorten the life of the battery and if a servo jam occurs that servo will drain the battery through the RX where as by using a powerbox would eliminate this error. any thoughts or ideas as to whether i am heading in the wrong direction or whether this set up will be fine for a newcomer to the world of Giants. thanks |

Well man, I think you will be disapointed in the servos. Although they have Tq, they wont be accurate or center very well. I learned that lesson the hard way when I started trying to do IMAC with analog servos. I would definately re-think the servos, just a thought. You will be amazed at the difference in the way the aircraft "feels".
I would go with one reciever and skip the power box, good digtal servos ( what you can afford) put in your match boxes, (I prefer smart-fly equalizers) and I use 2 batteries (6v) on seperate switches through a Smart Fly Batt Share, a lot of Pro guys only use one battery in 33%, usually 2300+mah, I feel better with 2. In my 33% edge I have this set up with 2300MaH NiMh batts and it worked awesome simple and not too heavy. You could even skip the Batt share and run the batts directly to the reciever. It wont hurt the reciever to run straight in with 6 volts. As for the reciever, the servos and associated equipment doesnt know or care if you use single or dual conversion. If you have a dual conversion radio you must have a dual conversion reciever, i.e. my JR 9303 is single so it uses a single conversion or PCM if you choose. Most others Futaba, HiTec etc are Dual. Good luck

Dual conversion is a function of the rx only. Your 9303 will work with the current JR dual conversion receivers.
I agree, go digital servos if you can. Hope this helps Alan |

thanks for the info. unfortunately though i have already bought all 9 st125mg servos because the guy from my local hobby shop had gave me the advice that they were the best for the money. then come to find out that they were more or less the cheap way to do it
.with using these servos i have now will they be ok to use till i can get me some quality servos? at least till i can get comfortable with flying this size of an airplane then upgrade to the higher end digi's. thanks for the help |

I completely understand. I used Hitec 945's and for a LOOONNGGG time. As for the rest keep it simple, you can use the single battery, it will work fine. I personally prefer the Smart-fly equalizers to JR matchboxes (and they are a tad less expensive) B esure to keep everything cable tied and secure throughout the plane. Good luck.
p.s. I grew up a little south of you in McGregor close to Waco. Later

Using a PCM rx will improve your resolution with analogue servos.
