Hi Gang, We have found the ultimate tailwheel! Mr Vern Smith from White Rose Engineering has create the MacDaddy Bling for your next project.. This puppy is CNC machined from billet Alum stock, and has mulitple bushing etc. The actually wheel assembly will no longer "break", "wobble", of let you down like prior Tail Wheels. Here's the Scoop, with pictures. Proud, and glad to be sporting two of these badboys on our Two new "Wood is Good" ML 300 Daltons!
![]() Vern is a first class gentleman, and a master craftsman! Please email, or call for pricing, and specs. whiteroseeng@comcast.net 239-254-0194 We really like the two options of the steering hardware, either conventional method with springs, or a positive locked on feel with a music wire directly to the bottom of your rudder! I will guarantee your total satisfaction with White Rose Engineering!

sure thing guys.. 2.75 OZ, or 77 grams per my old digital scale. I'm asked Vern to Chime in here, and share the details/Specs. The best tail wheel yet i'm seen, or used to date. He carries a 35%, and 40% versions, the one depicted above is my 40% Tail Wheel. He also has some new Top-secret products coming that will blow you away, they are currently in testing phase...

Let me say, it's very gratifying to see the interest in the tail wheel assembly and I want to thank Don Hamilton for starting this thread. If my machining skills were as good as Don's marketing skills I could retire and fly all day.
The tail wheel assembly was designed around the problems I have always had with the units on the market. They did not hold up well to the high vibration environment and soon developed excessive clearance between the wheel and axle as well as the spring and the shaft the wheel pivots around. The solution is not rocket science, you mount the yoke to the spring in double shear (holding the spring on both sides), utilize bushings designed for high vibration, use nylon washers for thrust bearings between the spring and yoke as well as the wheel and yoke, and finally; keep the tolerance's between .003 and .007 so dirt has a hard time working itself into the rotating and sliding surfaces. How's that for a run on sentence. The problem with these criteria is cost of manufacture. The yoke is CNC machines from 6061 T351 aluminum. The yoke requires machining on four sides so the part has to be turned and remounted in the machine four times. To maintain the necessary clearances between the wheel and yoke bushings and their respective shafts both must be drilled then reamed. The igus (igusnet.com) bushings are press fitted into the yoke and the wheel hub. Providing capability to steer with springs as well as what I consider the superior method of a .047 wire extending from the yoke through a hoop mounted in the bottom of the rudder also adds to the complexity and cost. The urethane tire is molded onto the hub and runs dead true. Don's scale and mine agree. The assembly is offered with one of two carbon fiber springs . One is 10" long and 3/16" thick, intended for 35 to 40 percent airplanes. The other is 7.5" long and 1/8" thick, intended for 25 to 35 percent airplanes. The price is $79.00 which I know is expensive but the d**n things are expensive to make. Shipping is $6.00 Priority Mail. Unfortunately, Florida residents have to include $5.00 sales tax. Replacement parts will be available although I can't imagine what could break besides the spring. To tell you the truth Don kind of caught me flat footed here. I haven't done my home work for mail order sales. I have to set up a pay-pal account. In the mean time just send me a check, if you're in a big hurry I'll ship the thing and hope the check arrives later. ![]() I've attached a .zip and a .doc file (same content) which includes more information. I'm in Naples Florida, last stop before you fall into the Everglades. The tiller bar steering wire that would go through the wire hoop attached to the back/underside of the rudder goes into a .065 hole drilled in the back of the tail wheel yoke. The hole is .450 deep allowing a good purchase for the wire. If you look at Don's photos you can see the set screw I have put into the side of the yoke. This set screw intersects the hole for the tiller bar wire. It is strongly suggested you file a small flat notch on the end of the tiller bar wire for the set screw to bottom on. Make the notch 1/8" long and place it 3/16" from the end of the tiller wire. _____[notch ]__] <- end of wire. Locktite is also strongly suggested for the set screw.
The ideal installation has the tail wheel pivot bolt located directly under the rudder hinge line. This results in a 1 to 1 steering ratio and excellent ground handling qualities. Sorry you can't upload the files, that work fine with my IPS. I'll try to email them to you. Vern |
