Default What Engine You Running In Your 3.3 Yak?

Just wondering what engine the 3.3 comp-arf yak owners are running? Are you happy with the performance and is there anything you would change?

Well I am sure you will get various answers on this but here is my opinion. I flew one for 2 years on a DA 150 with K&S 1090 pipes. This setup turned a Mej 32/10 or a Air Models 32/11 2 blade at the 6300 rpm mark day in day out. It was not enough power for this plane at my altitude of 3600 ASL in day to day windy conditions. To hover I had to use 85/95% throttle and it would pull out at maybe 1 mph on a real good day. Flying IMAC was no fun as it ran out of steam on the vertical up line to fast which also limited the down line manoeuvres. If I had the cash or if the 170 engines were available at the time I would have switched the 150 out in a heartbeat to soething else. I would definitely buy another 3.3m but I would not put a 150 in the nose. Others seem to have more success at lower altitudes. The plane is very big and has a lot of drag.

This isn't the first time I've heard this.

Here in the "Great Southwest", some of our guys have had lots of success with the ZDZ 210 same airplane on stock mufflers. Mtr puts out 22+ HP and only weighs a little over 11lbs. I currently have one in a 40% TOC Yak 54..another really big bird w/lots of drag. Prop it @ 34/10 for break in, and 34/12 thereafter. Don't run amsoil at high ratios..Break in at 32-1 Lawn Boy and no more than 40-1 after break in. Hope this helps.

I've seen it flown on the ZDZ 210 with what seemed to be great power.

I'm running a 3W CS 170 in mine with KS 1090 tuned pipes (saves a pound or so over a ZDZ 210 on muffs). Estimated AUW is around 45 lbs, but I haven't hung it yet. After 10 gallons through the 170, I can spin a Mej 32X10 at 6500, or what I prefer, the 32X12 at close to 6300. Hovers at around half throttle, and pull-out is decent. For 3-D, it's agreat plane with respectable power. For Imac, it is excellent. Mine flies as well as any with a ZDZ 210 on stock mufflers. Given the option, I would consider a 210 on pipes. If DA ever comes out with their 170 and it's compettitive, that would be the ticket (on pipes)

DA150, KS pipes, 42lbs dry, Im at sea level and LOVE IT! Plenty of power, more is always better, but itll do anything I need it to just fine.

I had a 3W 200TS in mine and was pretty disappointed at first until I finally propped it correctly. Then it was awesome.

3W's web site is now calling it a 210. Finally sucombed to the peer pressure from ZDZ I guess?

I ran the Pefa cannisters on it.

I acquired a ZDZ 210 and some KS 1090's for it but sold the airplane before I swapped it out. Once I put the right prop on it i didn't feel it was worth the effort as I was much happier.

Seems like the 3W ignitions have been getting a lot of bad press these days. Something to think about.

We need a DA 212 twin!

The 3w 212b4 is also an option if your into 4 bangers. I run one in a 44% Extra, 130" span wich I believe is the same as the 3.3 Yak. I saw a 3.3 Yak with a zdz 210 wich had excellent power but not like my 212/ extra. The 212 is a 12 pound engine a little heavier than the ZdZ 210 but in the ball park. The 212 is so much smoother at idle and full power then twins it has to be seen and heard to be believed. The transision speed and top end power are also very impressive. Plus the look and sound of a 4 banger can't be beat. Won't lie to you either, pain to break in,twice the exaust, plumbing and electrical to deal with and not a whole lot of fun to tune until it's well broke either, but in my opinion well worth it. When my Extra finally meets her fate I will order a 3.3 yak and throw the old 212 in her cause I think it would be a great combo. As far as Ignitions go I have not had any trouble what so ever. Bad press is often far from the truth.
