I haven't been following a lot of what you have here but from the photo of the break it looks like a good place to use a strip of carbon fiber, maybe on both top and bottom, what are your thoughts for repair or reinforcement?

Did your failure occur at the hinge as it appears in the photo? And which side at the hinge failed first (if you can tell )

Yes it failed just next to the outer right hinge where the balsa was slotted. Reconstructed it and added a strip of 1/32 plywood. Should be fine, haven't flown it yet.

Your repair looks good!

I'd really look hard at changing props though... ( and maybe reinforcing the other side before it fails too.... )
Luck, Dewayne

I reinforced the other side as well. And why should I change props? The Vess 13x6 performs flawlessly. I use wooden props on all my planes. Xoar for electric, Vess for glow and gas.

I'm sorry Martin, I meant less pitch. That plane ( design ) wont handle speed I'm thinking.

Not so much difference in speed between an APC 13 or 14x4W and the Vess 13x6. The difference with the Vess is that the YS 63 spools up within one second from idle to full throttle. Perfect for 3D.

The elevator broke on the very first flight where I only performed some light low-speed aerobatics.

So maybe they just cut into the LE of the front elevator a bit too deep to support the brace piece? and then put the hinge next to it making it weak?

I'm just trying to understand why it failed.... and would like to hear your thoughts as to why it failed.
You're not a newbie so what you think matters.

side note... they should have put that hinge much closer to the corner.

Well to prevent this issue is to first glue the hinges of the elevator by saturating the slots on both sides of the hinge with thin CA. Then slide the hinges in the stab and proceed as usual.

A trick I learned from Craigc5 is to drill two evenly spaced holes into the hinge slot which will give the glue a path all the way to the bottom and saturate more of the hinge.

Again, your repair looks great!

So I finally got my chinn yak done with the rebuild of the nose to accomodate my ys 63. What is the best prop to use ? I will have to check the CG like everyone is mentioning. I will start with a forward CG to get use to the plane and then adjust from there.

Make sure you install struts for the stab. I had to fix the stab twice and the last time I incorporated some hardwood. You will probably end up mounting your YS63 1/2-1" from the nose. I have it mounted all the way up front to compensate for the extra weight added to the tail.

The YS63 performs best with a Vess 13x6 or APC 13x4W on 20% nitro, 14x4W on 30%.

Just curious, what rpm's are you getting with the your various props?
