Default 3DHobbyShop 47" Yak Servos

Hey all

This kit suggests a few different servos, the recommended servo is the Hitec HS65HB. I would appreciate any comments and experience regarding these three servos, so I can make a good choice.

1) HS-65HB ($20.99 Ea.)
Carbonite gears
31 Oz-In.
0.11 Speed @ 6 Volts

2) HS-65MG Same as HS-65HB but using metal gears, bumps the price up 11 bucks. ($31.99)

3) Waypoint 092 ($16.80)
Plastic gears, metal gears for 6 bucks ($22.80)
22 Oz-In.
0.12 Speed @ 6 Volts

4) JR SM22 ($19.99)
Plastic gears, appears to be no upgrade to metal gears.
22 Oz-In.
0.12 Speed @ 6 Volts

I am hard on servos, I don't think I want plastic gears, stripped a few out. I don't know how tough carbonite is, so I would appreciate advice here. Are the metal gears the best, or do they cause problems?

Let me know what you think...

Regards
Ernie

I'd go metal gears for the elevator and rudder, plastic or carbonite are fine for the ailerons. The 3D Hobby Shop planes are so strong that after a while you'll be tempted to do some crazy powered tumbles that will put a lot of strain on the ele & rud servos. Carbonite gears are strong but in my experience they're also brittle and can't take repeated abusive maneuvers, if that's the way you're going to fly the plane. If you're just going to sport fly it then plastic or carbonite are fine for the rear surfaces. IMO the HS65MG's are the best choice for the elevator and rudder, you will definitely need more than 22 oz of torque for the rudder or else you'll be getting blow-back on knife edge.

Hey Brett

After reviewing the Waypoint 092 website, when you switch from plastic to metal gears, the torque goes up from 22 to 30 Oz. They must change the gearing ratios.

Have you or anyone you know used Waypoint servos?

Thanks
Ernie

The Waypoint servos look OK on paper, but in my experience, they feel just terrible in the air. The Hitecs work really well, I have no complaints about them except that hitec can't seem to produce enough to meet demand.

Hi ernie,

bought 5 waypoint 092MB, 3 of those skipped gears under minimal load, all in one direction only (same direction) and towards the end-of travel. The lugs on the case
just break off with small pressure. I passed that info to Air-craft RC-world and they admitted some bad reports about that particular servo. Did not stop them from still selling them! I went a size up (and price!) with the Hyperion Atlas 13TCB digital, great servo, I recommend it.
OR if you want super strong gears on a mini servo, go for the old JR 341, nylon gears but real deep final gearing (1/4" meshing).
still sold by Graupner as the C341, ball raced and digital versions exist also.
check the Hoellein site http://www.hoellein.com/ if you have problems finding any.

good luck.

Just to finish this thread up, I got 2 HS-65HB's for $20.00 Ea. and 2 HS-65MG's for $28.00 Ea. from Servo City on sale. Can't wait to get this thing together and get some stick time.

Thanks guys for all your input.
