Default Great Planes 35% Matt Chapman Cap 580 ARF

Now that the winter up here in the North East looks like it's just about over, my weekends have been filled with pulling the big planes out of mothballs and getting them ready for the season!

I got a GP 35% Chapman Cap580 last spring and let me tell you...it rocks! For the price, quality and completness of the ARF...it's a pretty sweet deal! I'm not beating the Great Planes drum by all means, and have alot of planes by other Manufactures that I love too. This thing was bone-head easy to assemble! The weight came in at a little under 27lbs with Lithiums and a 100 Twin! (for you 'high altitude guys...I know...you need it at 21 lbs with a Hemi strapped on it to get the ballistic TOC performance you require) Unlimited vertical at less than full throttle at my house! The knife edge, axis and 3D is great! I forgot what a nice plane it was until I dragged it back up from the basement and hit it with the Windex!

Does anyone else have one and what are your opinions on it? I think it's one of the industrys best kept secrets right now and less than $750 with all the goodies to complete it in the box!

Check out this 3D cockpit kit this guy Kregg sells for it! You use the supplied pilot bust that comes with the kit! It looks real and is the actual photo of Matt's cockpit.

I have one on the bench right now, it is a great deal, everything is usable, built strong, my only negative comment is mine must have been covered by Ray Charles just before he passed away. I was so upset I thought of stripping it and starting all over again. If the cowl didn't have the paint splash I would have.

Hey Don...Hit it with the monocote iron and heat gut. If it dosn't meet your approval, call Great Planes customer service and they will probably replace it! Thier customer service is unreal!

I spent more than two complete week ends and two irons & gun ( first iron gave up from being on so long !) The thing was the biggest prune you ever saw. It's down but looks like S__ __ t. I've had two Hanger 9 ARFs and the covering was 1000% better.

Have to agree here.. I'm building the GP 33% extra 300, and the balsa for the built up wings was a bit wiggly, and the wing tube had a small dent...
I didn't even call or anything, all I did was I filled out the Customer service slip on the GP website. The "Register your Plane" thing, and put the wing problem as something I think could have been done better.

About 5 days later i recieved an email from a guy named DAVE, saying if I forwarded my address he would help me out. So I did, and 3 days later I had a whole set of balsa for the wings AND a new wing tube !

Very good service!

Hey Don,
Forgive me, I had a moment there where I was not thinking. Of course Jay's check writing skills far exceed his want or desire to build. But, He says he flies, but he won't fly around me. I am going to bust his chops at Nall and I will be relentless until he caves. I will catch him flying the Edge. But don't tell him, or he will leave it at home.
I will have to let you guys know about Fri at Toledo. We have been trying to make arrangement ourselves. Oh, by the way, You have to keep Jay away from my plane on display so I don't have to keep wiping all the drool off of it with him thinking he will be getting another deal soon. Heck, he will start warming up the next check writing session for me.
