I decided to build the plane starting with the most difficult steps first so that everything else is ez such as the dreaded canopy/frame etc... maybe thats why I can't get motivated.

I finally made it down to the basement last night and forced myself to finish the canopy!

Now, all I have left is to do the gas tank and run the eletronics... it could be finished today or tomorrow, if I can stay in the mood.

OK... it's finally all done. I ran a tank of gas through it today at low speeds, its still pretty rich, but if it flies OK I'll leave it that way for several tanks. It weights 16 1/2 pounds... more than 2 1/2 pounds lighter than my bipe.... it should fly great. Maybe this weekend, weather permitting.

Six more flights today... FIVE OF THEM WERE DEAD STICKS!!!

I had leaned the engine up just a little, so I thought after the first dead stick that my problem was with the fuel mixture. I kept bumping the mix around, but every time I went up and made a few circles, it would die. It didn't gurgle and die, it would just die like you hit the kill switch.

Finally, after I decided to put it up for the day, I was taking everything apart, and did a squeeze test on the fuel line.... it was getting bubbles right at the tank connection. So, I need to pull the tank out and check all of the line connections. I hope that solves it. Luckily, today I was always high enough when it died that I could get it back without too much trouble.

Mike...you are the master at dead stick landings...Dont get too frustrated...This hobby at times is nuts...the little yak attack flies well..and lands on wind power quite well too...Hope to see you back at the field soon.

Thanks for the words of encouragememt. Maybe I should get a Hi-start and turn it into a glider!

I had the same problem once with my DA-50, even though mine wasn't new and ran great one day and started having problems the next. I did all the fuel system checks such as pull the carb off and clean it out, rebuild the fuel tank with new clunk and tubing, etc.

I finally gave up and sent the engine and ignition to DA for them to figure it out. It ended up being a bad spark plug cap on the ignition. $20 for the fix and a five day turn-around and was flying the next weekend.

I've also seen people fight this problem only to find out that it was an intermittent ignition switch or battery problem.

I've found that just because the components are new, I don't discount them as being the source of the problem.

Nice looking plane. Good luck.

Then the stab and wing with servos installed. One quick note.. even after cleaning the surfaces with windex, there's often streaks and other less than desirable spots on the wing. The wing in this picture had some "rub" marks where it looked like the factory was trying to sand off some glue or something around the wing pockets.

I've found the easist thing to get the surfaces looking like wet paint again is to lightly go over them with clearcoat scratch remover... about 30 seconds worth of work on the wing had it looking like new!

There was plenty of "precut" room in the wing pocket cover for the metal arms, but you can see that I had to widen the slot in the stabs to just about double the original size. If you're using the standard phoenolic servo arms, this wouldn't be necessary.
Are you still flying this plane? If so, how have you liked it? I'm considering getting one of these for my DA-50.
