I have only had a couple hours to work on the install but have the motor installed. Just a few more hours to cut open the bottom of the fuse, remove some formwers and install the pipe. It HAS to be done this weekend as I begin a different work assignment next week and have a fly in in two weeks! I guess total install time will be around 8hrs.

Shaun,
Not sure what the loading difference is between the Vess and the Mej27x10th. I'm guessing that since you are headed towards a 28x10, you'll want to avoid cutting the header and do that once the motor is run in and you are tuning on the 28x10.

I think my install took about 8 hours total as well - that included building the motor mount and dicing up the bottom of the plane. Oh, yeah - you may want to put a screw in the coupler/clamp/header so it doesn't blow off depending on the mount at the rear of the pipe... Ask me how I know that one

Post up some pics and numbers once you get it running...

Did you have the coupler going over the bump in the header? I am going to use the KS soft mount for the pipe.

I did, but the clamp could have been located better on the header side. The coupler gets pretty pliable once it heats up, so when you feel like you have a tight fit cold - it'll soften up once it gets hot. I had to hit my coupler with a heat gun to get it back on actually...

I think I have come up with a great way to make the pipe easily removable without having to cut anything once the install is complete. I'll post pics once it is done Sunday. I have to go help family move on Friday evening so this is really getting drawn out!

Dick - How hot does a pipe get?
How far away from the bottom of the pipe does unshielded ultracote need to be so that it doesn't melt.

Henna - did you keep the rudder servo in the stock location on the tray? If so I think there is only a 2cm clearance from the pipe. How did you shield it from the heat? I was thinking of lifting the servo with a tray but was still concerned.

How close can wood get to the pipe without getting burnt? - please give me an estimated distance above and below (assuming above needs to be farther away)

Thanks everyone!

Shaun,
I ended up using some heat shielding (like exhaust header wrap for cars) with it safety wired on the pipe and a self adhesive side version near my CF landing gear on the fuse. I'm using a single 8711 on rudder (pull/pull) and the clearance was tight. I created a wood tray that brought the servo up close to 1/2" from before.

My Ultracoat is about 1" or so away from the header and input on the pipe, as it gets near the rear of the pipe it may be about 1/4" to 3/8" from the pipe. On the input I also have the heat shielding too. I've had no problems at the rear and had to replace some of the Ultracoat when the exhaust coupler popped off and straight exhaust hit it..

If you are concerned with heat - here is a link to some good shielding and isn't really heavy (expensive, but works great) - http://heatshieldproducts.com/heat_shield_tape.php (about $50 for the 4" wide x 10ft roll.)

Ok, so below the rudder servo there is only covering separating the pipe from the bottom of the rudder servo?

That's correct - I'll try get a temp on that area today flying (i.e. that end of the pipe) and the rudder servo. So far no issues... I do have about 3/8" from the covering to the servo and about 3/8" from the pipe to the covering - really about 3/4" from pipe to servo with good airflow.. I have some leftover heat shield to put there if necessary...

How's your install coming along? The KS1090 is a huge and it quickly gets tight with it in there...

I started to tune the engine a bit and leaned it a little bit on the high and haven't touched the low - tached the 27x10th at 6650 on a warm motor. I richened it a touch to 6580 as I'll start on the low end next time out. Transition is beautiful so far and not feeling peaky at all. Most flights are under 1/2 throttle and WOT is ballistic. Shaun - you'll be pleasantly surprised once you get it going!!

Nice! Did you use the DA header gasket or did you use any RTV / high temp silicone instead ?
Did you use any lock washers on the header bolts? Just don't want my header to come loose from the motor.

I started with Copper High Temp RTV but my gasket failed and I ended up going to some high temp gasket material (like DA sends with it's motors). With the header bolts I used some locktite but not sure how effective it really is when it's hot.. I did retighten the header bolts when the all was warm with the cowl off and no issues.

Here's a vid on my third tank - nothing special, but tons of power... The Lawnboy Ashless sure has been smokey for me - you'll see the trail in the vid.. Winds at 10-15mph but you'll get a feel for how loud it is...
