Your mount looks awesome!

After speaking to Dick I wasn't worried about a bit of heat in the fuse. My exit hole is approx 130% entry and there is the low pressure lip to help also so I think the majority of the heat will escape during flight.

My pipe setup in my Pacific Planes 260 is very similar to yours. I am using the K&S comfort mounts as well. The only thing I am not crazy about on them is the fastening on the bump on the pipe. I applied a light bead of RTV to one side of the band to take up the space and put my comforts on the rear of the pipes.. For the tunnel area I just Monokoted the radio from the inside the fuse. The radio area in the fuse is no warmer than when you let the plane set in the sun..

Rickster - looks good. I installed the comfort-mount on the 'bump' per the instructions as I noticed in the 3 views for the pipe that the bump is actually where the internal cone is secured inside the pipe. Seems to me this would be the strongest area and why they picked that spot. Also I did not secure the pipe anywhere else so being secured at the bump probably takes a little weight/G's off the header. I especially like the fact that the pipe won't get dented.

I also used a little monocote on the bottom of the radio tray but just below the receiver to avoid direct heat. I raised my rudder sero 1cm and built a little ply shield on the bottom.

Same as you the radio area is not warm and you can actually feel the warm air slowly filtering from the rear exit after landing - warm air expands so it prefers to leave

What is your performance like?
What motor/prop are you running / rpm achieved / any tuning issues?

IT is probably better when mounted on the "bump" but naturally that length came out right on a bulkhead in the fuse. Also with that much pipe aft of the mounts I worried that they might move around in the back and rub on each other. Mine only have .375" between them..

Mine is a new 3W-106CS on 12" headers and 1060 pipes. So far I have 2 gallons of 32:1 BelRay H1R through it and it is turning a PT 28X10 6800 rpm on the ground, it was turning 6650 on the 3rd tank. Transition is very nice with a pronounced "on the pipe" area from around 5/8th's throttle up but with defined RPM changes at every ratchet increment from idle on up. Mine weighs 28.4lbs dry and the vertical is impressive even out of pullout from hover..

I am very pleased with the combo so far . I am expecting the motor to loosen up another 200rpm or so but even as it is now I am very pleased..

Rick

Mine leaked after I sent it in for bearing replacement. I sent it back in and it was resealed and did not leak again.

Can you tell me how the low and mid range is with the pipe? I have heard that it can be lost with a pipe setup. I am more concerned about low and mid range torque than top rpm but I am interested in trying a pipe setup.

O.k., after reading this thread it sounds like the low to mid range is good with the pipe. No my decision is do I need the pipe or not. I am building a Jtec 2.7M Extra. One of the planes built with a DA 100 and canisters and smoke came in at 25.5 lbs. I figure if I do a DA 85 with a pipe it should be at 24 lbs. or less. With a wrap around pitts it should be in the 23 lb. range. Either way it will be a power house. I did have a different plane setup with a wrap around pitts and it was extremely loud. So the question is, is it worth the trouble of installing and flying with a tuned pipe? Or should I just stick with the wrap around pitts with such a light airframe?

Here is a Pacific Planes 102 incher at 23lb and small change. Less than a gallon on a gurgling DA-85. Wrap around pitts and Vess 26A at 6700.

To me flying a piped setup is different and takes getting use to when 3D'ing. Not bad, just different feel.

On my 23 pound 10 oz 33% extra 300 with 32 oz of fuel the da85 and a 27x10th pulls the crap out of it. IMO power wise the pitts is best for a plane ~24 pounds or less. The 25 pound area is a gray area of pitts and pipe but then higher is a pipe for sure.

I had the 85 in a 102" Extra that was 23 lbs. and it was crazy power. It had a wrap around pitts as well. The only thing I was thinking was since I need to buy a new system would it be better to get the pipe anyway. I thought that it may quiet things down a bit also. It does sound like the wrap around would be a much easier setup though.

Hey DB. Mack's is right in Sac. You can take your plane in and he will build you a header on the spot thats a perfect fit. Then you can get any pipe/tuned pipe you want. Personaly my opinion is the Bud Bottle mufflers are as good or better than any pipe/cann available. While in Sac. a visit to RC Country is a must, and they are about 2 miles from Mack's.

Alt,
How would I get in touch with Mack? I did see the thread on the bud bottle cans. However, I figured they may be on the small side for an 85cc engine??
