Can you give me your take on how you tuned the 85?

With the pitts muffler i leaned the low needle untill it wouldn't transition then richend it till it did then during upline listened for a sag in rpms and then leaned it until i thought it might be sagging then richend it until it didnt sag. After all that i just leaned the low speed needle every time it started to sound rich durring break in with a few high speed adjustments here and there.

With the canns on the 100 it was way more trial and error but with the same method.

Im not better at tuning gas engines than any one of you guys but im getting better with every new (to me) engine I get.

Edit when i leaned the 85 until it wouldn't transition I meant until there was a hint of not transitioning. If I leaned until it wouldn't transition at all it was way too lean.

Mine is only rough at dead idle. If you come up one or two clicks on the trims it's ok. It runs fine in the air except when on finals at low throttle it gains rpm when you turn upwind with no throttle change. I have lived with this for almost 12 months and don't think much of it now. Sometimes it seems a little rich in the mid range, but other than that the motor is a top performer.

Canister is a KS95 rear exit. I'm considering changing to a MTW110 to see if it is any better.

From the vids and what I've read the motor seems happier (smoother) on the MTW.

Its my backup plane for IMAC & would like to make an attempt at quieting it down some.....Gene
I think in order of noise from least to loudest (also power):
Greeves
RE3
KS1090

The pipe setups are way more potent than the stock muffs, so although they are quieter for a given RPM in my opinion, the increased RPM negates this considerably. I think the KS1090 is the same noise level as a stock muffler. For a quiet setup the 3 blade would really help. When you are getting over 6600 on 28x10 mej on the ground, it sure is loud in the air. KS1090 tends to peak in noise over 80% throttle... 28x10 rips on demand. I'd just run it with a 25x12 3 blade. Also, you can just limit the throttle by adjusting endpoint to say 80%.

For an idea of power, I run a curve on my throttle and at 50% throttle only 1/3 carb open and 75% throttle stick carb is 50% open. With this setup and 25-26lb 35% AW 260, I have unlimited vert at 70% and noticeable acceleration when going to full power. just watch my video in my signature. That was the setups 6th run! I run 1 turn low needle, 1.5 turns high and it is so potent, reliable, and smooth transition I don't bother messing with it. There is no noticeable 'coming on pipe'. Also with my curve the throttle is nice and soft from 30% - 50% for torque rolls and rolling harriers etc.

For kicks I am going to experiment this year with Xoar 28x12 and cut down to achieve around 6000 on the ground. I predict a 27x12 will do this. I want a prop that is quieter, with higher speend range than my Mej... we will see.

Has anyone tried the 29 x 10 and reported the rpm and flight performance?

I'm really interested in this as well, but also want a bit more speed at lower thottle so I am going to experiment with 27x12 (Xoar 28x12 cut down next year i.e in April... I'll try it as 28x12 for kicks to see what I will get, but am not going to bother to lengthen header 1-2" as I should.)

What length header you running now (with the 28x10 setup)?

6450-6480 for your first run... lol, that's right on the money and consistent with all the other 6450 first runs!

I love your reaction to the RPM at the end of the video. I qoute : "Oh my God.... Oh my God, did you get that on the video?" and your wife saying "Stop.... you're scarring me!"

Expect another 200 once you have 6 gallons through her and transition to amsoil sabre 100:1

I really do hope it is simple as richening it up but since it was tuned by DA Australia staff I doubt it very much however they have closed shop for the year so I have to sort this one out my self.

The pic bellow was taken during the build. As you can see it doesnt really open into the fuse.

Question: What if the side holes on the cast were seal with duct tape (as an experiment) to see if that affects pressure on the diaphram?

1 turn low, 1.5 turns high.
Also, as DB said, make sure you have a decent size entry hole for air into the fuse and exit hole that is about 40% larger.
