I suggest getting a 28x10mej. I haven't heard of this occuring on a larger prop with the pipe.
Forget about the engine load, but replace engine load with noise load.
A well tuned 80cc engine on pipes will turn in the 5800 - 6500 rpm range, and the prop should suit the power the engine will deliver at those rpm. Larger diameter/larger pitch props perform much better in ALL respects, and do not produce deafening noise (>80dbA) at the pilot's position. It takes some getting used to, but once accomplisleshed it proves that small props just produce the FEELING of plenty gusto, without producing the PERFORMANCE.

Interesting points there, Pe.

My 85 is in an Aeroworks 35% Extra 260...awesome setup - 26.5lbs dry.
MTW RE3 pipe
~15" KS flexi header
Mej 28x10
95 octane fuel, 50:1 Bel Ray H1R
Altitude 50-100 ft above sea level

6,200 - 6,300 RPM

Hello Matt,

This is the information we have all been waiting for in this thread - a direct comparison of the KS1090 to the RE3.

Our results have consistently been 6,450 on a brand new motor on Mej 28x10 so quite a lot higher than your performance. Is your motor broken in yet? Mine was on Castrol Super 2 oil at 32:1.

I think your setup is a touch lighter and a bit quieter though.

A friend of mine asked me to post this for him: What's the best prop for the DA 85 and MTW RE-3 tuned pipe after break-in?

Mej 27 x 10 or Mej 28 x 10

Im running the Mej 27X10 and love it. I hear the prop of choice is the Mej 26X12.

Is the RE3 diameter a little less compared to the KS1090? Apparently ES is developing one for the 85... wonder what the weight and performance would be compared to these pipes.

The KS1090 is 150-200rpm stronger than the RE3 (post 557) and has a larger diameter. However, the KS1090 is loud, so keep that in mind.

DA85+RE3: Best overall performance Mej 27x10TH. 6600 RPM, fast spool, great top end power, awesome mid range. A little louder than Mej 27x10.

I would not want an 28x10 on my DA85 and RE3.

On cheaper props: Menz 26x12

Not necessarily if you tune the header length well. The extra damper section is behind the tuned pipe, so the engine does not sense it is there.
Pple tend to make flash readings when comparing without going to the trouble of changing the needed parameters. That's the stuff myth's are made of.
The header of post 557 was 15", quite long for less peak power and better throttle response. Excellent setup imho. Peak power is not everything and can be sacrificed for better all-over performance.

Love this thread... let's keep it alive!

Reza... did you cut off a few 1/4" sections of the header?

Maybe the 28-10 mej would work with the re3 if the header was cut to the exact right length?

I'm leaning towards the re3 due to it's reduced diameter (and light weight I believe but don't quote me on that) because I'm hoping to put this combo into a PAU 36% Edge. (my 40th is approaching... hoping for a really BIG present!)

And that brings me to another question... if you are tuning the header length but cutting 1/4" at a time... does that effect the whole mounting system for the pipe?

Thanks for your comments guys... great thread!

I'm running a 1090 pipe on my Da85 w/ Mej 24x12 3-blade and seeing 8K+ at WOT. I probably need to richen up the top end, but is this normal?
