Default Build your own Dash!

Making a good looking dash for your airplane can be a fun and easy thing to do.

The first thing you need is some sort of reference for your dash. In my case it was an Edge 540T, and after a short googling session I found this:

Then I searched again on the web for corresponding images of the intruments I could identify. A little work in photoshop and I came up with this.

After which I needed to actually build the dash. Using scrap balsa I had laying around I made two face plates and glue them onto opposite sides of some balsa blocks. After that I sheeted the top and did a little light sanding to smooth things out.

I painted the dash the same way you would paint the inside of your airplane. A light coat of gray primer, followed by the texture paint of your choice. Be sure to mask off the actual dash area as we will be sticking our printed dash onto it. Then its just a case of printing your dash on some high gloss photo paper, trim, and attach using double sided tape. Why tape? Well if the dash starts to fade you can peel it off and put on a new one! A year and a half later and mine is still going strong!

I've attached the files for my finished dash, and a bunch of instrument images I had used. So get cracking and lets see some of your home made dash's!

I could have used those pictures a few weeks ago...

I used styrene sheet, drilled the instruments holes, used a drill rod and punched fake screw heads into the plastic, then added clear sheet material and instruments printed on photo paper. The sequence board is removable so you can change the paper if needed.

Chris you're my hero. People look at my 50cc Edge panel and ask me where I got it from. Actually they don't but I know it's there and that's what's important!

I took a pic of an extra panel at an airshow last year, for those who want to do an Extra panel:

Another thing you can do is look up screen shots of aerobatic panels on flight simulators, that's how I did my Compy several years ago. Works for me!
