OK FG gang I had a booboo at the field today. My beautiful Cap 232 now has reatract, well they retracted once. I'll First paint the picture. Last week I maidened my cap. During my second or third flight I hit a bird. The bird hit on my landing gear. The sad part is I never saw the hit... But I had feather smashed all over the landing gear. Nice I know. I saw a small crack in the covering right at the base of where the gear bolts to the fuse. I tried wiggling it around and could not make it flex. So today I'm out flying and have a not so soft landing and ripped the gear off. I now have a near perfect square whole in the bottom of my plane.
My question is how would you go about fixing it. I thought I would just use 30 minute epoxy and glue it back on.. Would this be strong enough? Also, if I make it too strong would this be a problem? This is a 27% plane. Has anyone use nylon bolts on this size plane? Any fix advice would be greatly appreciated.. Please let me know soon, because I plan on fixing it Friday. |

I'd think you'd be fine with epoxy and some milled fiber. Post a pic of the damage.

Huckinhax knocked the bottom out of a yak because of pcm lockout and I fixed it with 30 minute epoxy and micro balloons. Then small patches of 1/8 light ply. Don't just trust epoxy... Strengthen it up but keep it light.

Epoxy should be fine. You can lay piece of fiberglass cloth (medium) on the edges too. That would make it really strong but expoxy alone will do the job.
So you said you were bird hunting that happened Just kidding you are lucky it didn't hit the leading edge of the wing or poping an elevator. Good luck on the fix, the way you said it's no big deal at all.

Well when I got home from work last night. I looked it over again. Really looks just like a big square hole. The only thing I'm concerned about is the hardwood they used to glue the floor to. It's like a triangle stock. I wish I could remove it and put new in. Some of it is cracked. The only problem is it's glued really well to the side of the fuse. I'm afraid I'll do more damage removing it. I might try 30minute epoxy and micro balloons. Then maybe a sheet of fiber glass cloth on the inside. It's amazing how clean it came out, after it broke.

I agree that epoxy and some fiberglass cloth would do the trick.
And dont worry about it being too strong.......in my opinion, the gear can never be too strong. |

Phoneman, no the bird hit the gear last week. I noticed a small crack in the coverin above the gear. And feathers stuck on the gear. I got real lucky it didn't wipe the whole plane out.
