I think if you have never wieghed your plane before the human brain has a couple of preprogrammed auto responses.
40%=37.5 35%=26.5 |

The funny thing is My buddy's 50+ pound 3W cap (the whole thing is glassed like a warbird and painted, cans) flies really nice and still snaps decently. Its a fat pig pulling out of a hover (better with a 30x12) but I could fly the INT with it no problem. Dont get me wrong when your landing and pull the power that heavy bi$% comes down right now.

The plane I flew last year is 36 lbs 11 oz with cannisters. Weighed twice at home and once at the NATS in Will B's $2000 unit. Belive me, 36.5 lbs is lite!

40 is not going to be that hard to do on that plane. Jon Leylands is 40 and he didnt do much other than build it pretty much stock.

My most recent build came out to 37 lbs 14 oz. This is for a 42% Extra with DA150, cans, 3 blade prop, etc. To get to that weight it took lightening mods, foam coring, carbon fiber, careful use of glue, pickyness on wood selection and lots of sanding.
It’s amazing to me how many people say they have a 35 or 36 pound 40%! It takes a lot of planning and work to get this class of plane to those weights especially, when they have canisters. Yes, it can be done. Yes they do exist. Yes, some people have them (i.e. Ryan, Jeremy, Jonas, Wayne, Sensei, etc.). However, it’s the exception and not the rule. For the ones who do have them it shows in their builds, their setups, and how they fly. I always love the guy who says his 40% with a 3W or DA150 only weighs 36 pounds. Then you see it struggle on the up lines to maintain speed, you see no lightening mods done when you look inside, it looks like their wing tube is made out of conduit, you see big honk’n Nicads for batteries and you see large chunks of lead added for nose weight. Common guys, tell the truth or don’t tell at all. It’s an insult to the person who really does have a light plane if you orally subtract 5 pounds from yours. If the truth be told most people probably don’t really know what their plane weighs much less have a means to measure it. Sorry for the rant… |
