Hi i am building an EF 88.5 inch Extra 300 50 CC This is my first gas plane and I am trying to decide on exhaust. I really really want a smoke set up with a slimline pits muffler but I am concerned that performance will suffer. The other option is an ES Composite Tuned pipe but I dont think you can run smoke through a tuned pipe. (CAN YOU ?? )
I would like opinions on SlimLine Pits Muffler w/ Smoke -vs- Es Composite tuned pipe, What type of performance losses will I see with the slimline and smoke set up. Obviously flying style is 3D Thanks for the help ' Crash-n-Burn |

Remember with a tuned pipe you are going to lose a little of the transition for an exchange in higher RPM on the top end. Smoke fitting on a composite pipe can be done using either a pressure fitting put from the inside of the pipe or using JB Weld or similar product and inserting a metal tube in the front of the pipe. If you use the second option make sure you put the tube in at an angle toward the rear exit of the pipe.
For more information on smoke with tuned pipes just watch QuiQue's demo with the new DA-170 here on FlyingGiants under the video. He has great smoke from the Greeves pipes he uses. - Parker |

Dude Awesome, I just ordered the ES pipe with a Solid header, the guy at ES said I should put the fitting in the header after the bend just before the pipe. I was going to go with the fitting method, sealed with high temp RTV. |

I like that idea too. RTV will hold up decent, but over time the oil in the fuel will eat at it a bit. I'd put the fitting in the header like he said since the threds from the fitting will hold better than in the thin composite pipe. The hotter the exhaust the better the smoke, so being in the header will be good. You ordered the 25mm solid drop from KS?

We use RTV on full scale turbine parts. Holds up fine, even in the extreme heat.

The header is comming from ES composites, It is a solid header 25mm drop but the manufacturer is MTW. If KHS is better I can have it switched, the pipe wont ship until next week. What do you think ? |

Both MTW and KS are good quality. I was just making sure you got the correct drop and not the zero drop.

We run smoke in our setup, which is as follows: Airplane is an 88" EF Yak. DA50 with a 25mm drop header, and an awesome ES Composites tuned pipe. We put the smoke nipple near the exhaust port of the head, with some JB Weld. Tons of smoke!! The cool thing about smoke with a tuned pipe is that the smoke gets directed away from the plane towards the rear, so not too much of a mess on the tailfeathers.

So I have the ES pipe on order. I saw some posts about durability problems with the pipe, like it cracking after 40 or so flights or the CF resin softening even sooner causing deformation.

or You can also get individual graphics from Fliton. They sell them at a very reasonable price and high quality. http://fliton.com/catalog/index.php?...e2d466f39f647a |
