Default Denver area 3D'ers

I'm back in Colorado for a while, looking for local guy's to fly with. I've looked at some of the local clubs that are close to me, but I think the noise issue is going to be a problem in the state parks? Where is everyone flying at?

Where are you in the aera. I fly out of mile hi 5.5 miles east of E 470 and Quincy. The Aero Works guys use this fild to fly there new products.
It is a privet AMA club so we can keep beter controll of Aircraft in the air and freq. use. We do havea db max range but we dont have campers hikers ect to wory about.
We will be moving in the future but it will be closer to town buy about 1 mile. At the Aparaho County Fair Grounds. The perposed area for our run way is a paved road that is not in use. As with any thing involving goverment it's still in flux but they realy want our club on there site.

Hey Dan,

I'm over on Santa Fe and Evans, I don't really care about driving a bit to fly at a nice field with cool people. I'll be flying a 150 on stock mufflers this year, I'm sure it will be fine as most guy's fly stock mufflers all the time. I really wanted to try a P-Tip prop, but they are loud.

I don't think there are major noise issues at Chatfield, and I think Dan is talking about Crosswinds, which is also a nice place, or maybe it's mile-high in Aurora. All these fields are nice fields, but I really liked the laid back atmosphere at Crosswinds.

I was talking about Mile Hi in Aurora. I think that Aero Works uses can mufs on most of there stuff but Im not shure. I,v never flowen at cross winds so I can not say how there folks are. But iv never realy found a bad groop of people at any of the flying sites that Iv been at. I got my traning from my dad at chatfield. There a good group of people out there. One of the biggest and best runways in the state. Huge pits. Its just too far for me to go out there on a regular bases. I, only about 7 miles from Mile Hi. You live a bunch clooser to Chatfield Res. We have a guest pilot program at our field. I,m shuer that other flying sites have the same deal. So try several out till you find one that works for you.

I was in the Denver area for 6 months last year and did a lot of flying at Chatfield. It's a really nice facility with plenty of room and a good group of members. Membership is not required (although encouraged) but you do have to either pay the state park fee, or get an annual pass. Noise was never a concern; I was flying a standard muffler 150 and a ZDZ 80 with Pitts. I never flew at the Mile High field, but I did stop in there one day to check it out. If you fly giant scale, I can't say I'd recommend it. The field is small and the pit area is tiny, not to mention there are no covered areas. I didn't even think I could have gotten my 40% through the fence gate there.. In my opinion, it just wasn't a great facility.. I was also told by the one guy that was there (flying a .40 size fun fly) that I'd have to get signed off by a club instructor before I'd be able to fly on my own. This was after I had explained to him I had been flying giant scale, primarily 3D for a few years... I've heard the Crosswinds field is very nice, but their membership fees are very high and it's a long drive.

Since I was only in the area temporarily, Chatfield worked best for me as I didn't have to deal with ridiculously high membership and 'initiation' fees most of the other clubs charged. I will say that high altitude flying completely sucks, regardless of the field, though..

Attached are a few pics of Chatfield.

AHP, I lived out here for 10 years before moving to the east coast, I now exactly what you mean about the altitude. I'm hoping my Carden will fly Ok with a 30x10 Mejzlic?

Let me know when you want to get rid of that DA 150!! hehe!! If you sell it I can have the DR flying before the summer is out! I talked to Aerographix's I got them to give me an idea for a new scheme for the DR!! I think ALOT of people will like this scheme if I can pull it off!!

I tried both a 32x10 (which I normally ran) and a 30x10. The plane flew better with the 30x10 but was pretty worthless for 3D as it just didn't produce the thrust I needed. A lot depends on what your plane weighs, though. My Edge was pushing 41lbs and in the summer months, it wouldn't even hover unless I burned off most of the gas. Earlier in the year, when it was still in the 40-50's, it would hover and pullout, but very slowly. I was going to try a Vess 32A but a couple of guys at the field said they didn't work well at altitude. I'm not sure if there's much of any truth to that, though. I ended up giving up on flying the 40% once the summer months hit. I started flying a 31% Extra with a ZDZ80 (20lbs) and it was absolutely ballistic, even in the altitude and heat.

Call over to aeroworks and ask for Mark Dennis, he's a great guy and flies all over that area.

How do you think Our Cardens would fly with a ZDZ 160 Super or a ZDZ 210? Mine is 40-41 lbs too.

I'm looking at Getting back into the 33% with a DA 85, I had a H9 cap this fall with a 85, it was ballistic at 23lbs built stock. The new Sukhoi at 19.5-20 lbs would be awesome here.

I've flown at Mile Hi and Chatfield..

My big complaint with Chatfield right now is they have all but closed the main east-west runway except for days with an extreme crosswind on the N-S runway..
I prefer to fly in the early mornings and that puts the sun right in your face on the N-S runway..

The state built a new campground just off the west end of the runway and you can not over fly that area..

Chatfield does have a covered seating area but it's outside the pits. There is no cover in the pits.

Mile-Hi has covered areas in the pits and 2 covered work tables.. not big enough for a 30% plane but it's there.
We also have a covered radio impound.. Something Chatfield lacks.

Pics of the filed can be found in the Gallery
http://www.milehirc.com/Ridge%20View...w_Day_2007.htm

My big issue at Mile-Hi? Golpher holes! there are some nasty ones off the east end of the runway.

Bot fields have their pro's and cons.. All I can say is fly both and pick your favorite.

I'm pretty sure the ZDZ 210 is about 2lbs heavier bare, if not more, and the standard mufflers it uses are huge and probably pretty heavy as well. I think it would be too much weight and I really don't think it fit inside the cowl without some serious hacking. It's too bad because the 210 is an absolute beast. A buddy of mine has one ripping a 34x14 in a 50lb+ TOC Yak and it flies it like an overpowered foamy. I debated the same thing when I was out there and was pretty well sold on a Kroma 180 (about 8-9oz's heavier than a 150). I was leaning toward a 3W 170CS but the $600 difference swayed that decision pretty easily. I ended up not doing either, but If I had to make a decision, it would be the 180 for brut HP bang for the buck. I have never heard a bad/negative thing about it. If you wanted to go the light weight route, the ZDZ 160 is a good option. I never considered it because my Edge was already too tailheavy with the 150 and the RX batteries in the engine box so the 160 would have made it worse.

RE: Chatfield, There were several occasions where I used the E/W runway. Unless they changed it in the last 6 months, it was open whenever the wind direction necessitated it. The campground is wayyyy out there and even flying a 40%, I was never concerned about flying over it. I actually strongly preferred the N/S runway, but I always flew in the afternoons and evenings.

I'd stay away from Cherry Creek if you're flying giant scale. I went there one time when Chatfield was closed and I was not impressed with the facilities. The pit area and the entrance out to the runway is not suited for giant scale and the runways are very small. The field sorta sits on the top of a hill and the layout is just odd, IMO.
