Check this out, I'd say he had good luck...but his skill is what saved his plane for another day!!!

This is the video of Bill Hempel flying knife edge after losing a wing, this is a pretty old video, and the reason that if the same thing happens to anyone else they call it a "hempel". Good video though, always fun to watch.

mflander, sorry I didn't realize it was old...I saw this today and hearing him voice outloud on the video "I've got it", I though, holy smokes he can't possibly pull this off and then proceeded to barely scratch some paint off the rear stab.

not very many people out there would even think of doing that after a wing falls off. i saw another video of a guy doing that.

Here's a clip of Frazer Briggs pulling off a similar save while practicing a few days before the Desert Aircraft challenge last year in Queensland Australia. The best thing was his skill allowed him to get away with so little damage he just borrowed someones wing panel and flew on to win the comp.
