Default Radio Active Airshows

Hey Everyone,
Chris "Lucky" Carnes here with some exciting news. As some of you may know AMA decided to cancel the show team program. It offically ended the program after a 30+ year run effective the last day of 2007. After a year's worth of work new leadership has approched AMA with and new program that was approved and took effect Jan. 1st, 2008. This new program will put show teams in a whole different light with a new agenda and focus. The new mission is to reach as many non-model aviation people as possible through working and performing in full scale air shows. The focus is to educate and entertain the general public with hopes to recruit new membership into our hobby and the AMA. This will be done by placing teams in areas where the airshow market demands. In other words they will be where the shows are. Team AMA hopes to have 10 to 12 teams set up nationwide and will work through the ICAS(International Council of Airshows) to work this market. ICAS is to Airshows as NASCAR is to racing.

These new teams will be required to have a very professional look, awesome static display including flight simulators, top pilot skills, and a passion for working with the public to answer questions and work to plug the general public into our hobby/sport. As these teams travel accross the country they plan to call on the local clubs for their support as well as help the clubs in return. The teams will invite the local clubs to come out and help work the show but at the same time it is the mission of the teams to help the clubs grow. One event that the teams would like to help with is getting the clubs to do a fly-free day or have a open house. These clubs can qualify for the AMA's new TAG(Take off and Grow) program to where they can get trainer aircraft and simulators to do these events.

If you get a call from one of Team AMA's show teams please understand they just want to help. We are all in this together as an R/C family and we just want to spread the word about our great hobby. If you are interested in starting a show team we have a need for teams in quite a few areas. Two teams are needed in the CA. area; one in the south (Tustin/Irvine) and one in the northeastern part of the state. Also we need a team to work the northeast part of the country based somewhere in the NY area. And finally we have a need for a team in the southeast to work FL, southern GA, and southeastern AL. If you are interested in this exciting opportunity please contact us through www.teamama.com and send a message through the contact us page on that site.

One last note is that our team, Radio Active Airshows, has a great season lined up this year. Our airshows kick off in May with our first trip to MCAS New River, Jacksonville, NC on May 3-5,2008. If you guys in the mid-atlantic region are interested, check out our schedule at www.flyradioactive.com. Also, keep an eye out on our site. We are working a whole new face-lift for our site and we hope the new site will go live in a few weeks. See you guys at an event. Keep'em Flying.

Great to hear this chris I wish I could be a part of it!! We need the northeastern part of NC to grow badly! I Have two trainers and not a whole lot of interest in the hobby from anyone!! I would gladly give up my weekends to give to the hobby considering I have recieved so much from the hobby the past 15 years!!

Outstanding. It will be great for a team with a professional look and flight skills to compliment it talking with people and showcasing R/C for the masses.

So, I have to ask, who is paying for those nice trailers and the fuel to pull them around the country? I would love it some of my AMA money was being put to a good use like this one...where the rubber meets the road, so to speak.

Also, with so many teams throughout the country, when are the tryouts?

Good luck!

Thanks everybody!

flyin tiger,
to answer your question, sponsors, sponsors!!! We would not be able to do what we do if it wasn't for AMA and our sponsors. Far as the try out question, not sure if any of the other teams really have try outs. Its more like, getting in contact with them and seeing if they need help.
This the greatest hobby out there, and I'm proud to be a part of it. Thanks again everybody for taking the time to read this article, lets make it happen!!!

Chris

Lucky, great article!!!!
As Roy, AKA Hooker53 said, on behalf of the rest of RadioActive Airshows, thanks for a great article detailing what we do to promote the hobby!

FlyinTiger, As the newest member of RadioActive Airshows, lemme tell ya, the tryouts can be brutal! You wouldn't believe what you have to go thru! Actually, I am joking...

To make a really long story short, right before I got into the hobby 12 years ago, I saw these guys when they were still Flights Unlimited. I remember thinking it would be really neat to do something like what they were doing, showing people about something that you really love.

Fast forward 12 years, to a swapmeet in Winston Salem, where I ran into Peanut Mcnabb, and he invited me to an indoor fly-in... One thing led to another, and I was approached about possibly flying in the indoor shows that the team was working on. It only took me 12 long years, but I was finally able to realize a dream!

Great piloting skills are essential, but most important are people skills. If you truly have a love for the hobby, and can talk to anyone about it, and express yourself well, then you would make a great addition to a team. The thing I like the most about RadioActive is the message Jeff Phillips and the rest of the team has for kids. The guys work hard to show kids there are great things out there to get involved with and you don't have to turn to violence or gangs or drugs to have a good time and be accepted.

Guys, be sure and check our website regularly, as Lucky says. Our new, updated site will be online soon and will have a great new look! Be sure to keep an eye on the schedule page, and if we are going to be at an event near you, come out and say hello! We love to talk airplanes!!!

TIM,

And a big ol welcome aboard to ya. Glad you are "Almost" ha ha one of us. We do run the "Rookies" through the gauntlet. (the good stuff-still to come Hee Hee) Just kidding (not really) Tim you will realize like the rest of us, when you do your first big show like we do at places like Andrews, Cherry Point and Paxt River Navel Airstation and the likes you turn around and suddenly you are in front of anywhere from 10,000 to 60,000 spectators that it takes anywhere from like you said, 12 to 20 years to be an overnight success. You my freind are in for the thrill ride of your life!!!
