Finally getting caught up after a long week at work, This afternoon I was able to get the motor mounted. Decided to strap a DA150 to nose of this bird. Locate the 4 - 1" wooden dowels. Apply CA to the inside of each to harden and prevent them from splitting. You may depending on the blind nut, have to drill out the holes. In this case I had to open the hole with a 5/16 drill bit. Install the 1/4-20 blind nuts, secure them in place with thin CA. Mount the motor using 1/4-20 SHCS, I used 1 1/2 in screws. Apply blue loc tite and tighten the screws down.

Today I installed the throttle servo and pushrod. I had to cut a hole for the servo to properly line up with the throttle arm. Cut a piece of wood to cover the existing hole. Now time to make a throttle linkage, using a piece of carbon fiber tube, 4-40 threaded rod and 4-40 ball links. CA'd a piece of threaded rod on each end of the carbon fiber and screwed the ball links on. This was pretty easy to do, before flipping the fuse back up on its gear, drilled in the bottom of the engine box for the plumbing.

Now the major assembly of the plane is complete it is time to start running wires and installing the guts of this bird. I am using 5955 on rudder, elevator and ailerons and a 5985 on throttle. 2- FromeCo 5200 with deans to FromeCo regulators with Pin/Flag to a Smart Fly Power Expander Pro. Receiver is a JR 921 with 2 remote receivers. On the Ignition I am using a FromeCo 2600 to a Badger,
FromeCo reg to a smart fly FO kill switch. All wiring is Air Wild heavy duty braided wiring. Here are some pics!!!! The first picture is my little helper... she insisted that I take a picture of her and the plane. Daddy's little girl, she usually gets her way with those big blue eyes!! |

Ran the elevator servo wires from the back up to the power tray. I am using a wire loom to protect the wiring in this install. The harness is secured every 6 - 8 inches in order to eliminate wires just flopping around.

Setup the rudder servo tray and pull pull cables. I am using 3 5955's on the rudder. Locate all of the hardware required for this step. Rudder Tray, 4 - F30 strips, 4-40 1/4HD Ball Links, Air Wild Cable Attach Fitting HD, Stainless Steel Cable, Titanium Turn Buckles, 3 - 3" servo arms and 3 servos of preference.
First step is to glue 2 pieces of F-30 strip together with CA. After the glue has cured locate the center of each strip. Center the rudder servo tray on your mark and mark holes. Drill a pilot hole where you have marked the wood. Secure the rudder tray to the strips using #6 self tapping wood screws. Start installing your servos with the output shaft away from the bell crank. Once all of the servos are in place, start installing the linkages. I started with the servo closest to the bell crank first and worked my way back. I will program each servo once the tray is secured in place. The position of the servo rudder tray will contribute to balancing the plane once assembly is complete. Now let's set up the pull pull cable. Using the Cable Attach Fitting, Dubro Threaded rod end, and stainless steel cable. Push the cable through the CAF and tie off a knot you may have to double up the knot. Pull the cable so the knot rests inside of the CAF. Screw a threaded rod end on the CAF. The ends come with a flat tip screw, I am using a 4-40 SHCS, washer and lock nut. Secure it to the rudder control horn. Repeat for the other side and pull the cables up to the servo tray keeping them parallel to each other. At this time I am going to leave them alone until the tray is secured.

Now it is time to set up the aileon servos. Each wing gets 2 - 5955's in this setup. Locate 2 - 1 1/2" servo arms, 2 - 5" titanium pro link push rods, 4 - 1/4 HD Ball Links. You will need 2 servo extension for the servos, 24" and 6". I made one with a single 6 pin connector. Install the servo with the output shaft closer to the ailerons. Setup a push rod with a ball link on each side. If you are using programmable servos start with the inboard servo then the outboard. Repeat the same steps for the other aileron.

Waiting on a few packages to arrive in order to finish up some loose ends on this project. I need to install the mufflers, FO kill switch, and Ignition battery. Once they have been installed it will be time to start working on the CG. Then I will be able to determine the exact location for mounting the rudder tray.
