Thanks for the compliments guys - I have been doing some work on the plane today and will update the thread again this evening, with more pics. And just FYI - I have been working on written instructions, I just have to have somebody proof read it after I attach the pics - it will then be proof read by Ivo Krill and hopefully posted on his iste as well Philip Barnetts of Skyline Aviation...readily available to download from the site.

Today I was able to get some misc items done (while also entertaining the In-Laws) with the help of my friend Wayne Matthews (who took a break of his busy schedule getting ready for the Joe Nall) - much appreciated Wayne!
First few pics is of the cowling - showing you the CA style type hinges (mentioned before) glued to the lip of the cowl. Also, you can see the most forward mounting block and slot for the tab of the hatch.

The next thing I went after was setting the wing incedence. Do not attempt to set the wing incedence with just one wing in position, use both wings. This requires you to trial fit the wings to insure they both pass through the fuse and into eachother with no issue. It may be required to smooth up the cutouts in the fuse for the blade spars to pass through. And also be sure to check the fit of the wing root next to the fuse - sand the wing root if needed.
They only supply two phenolic anti rotation discs (I dont know why they dont send 4ea). So you will be required to make two discs to accomodate the 6mm wing bolts. I made mine out of birch with carbon fiber glued to the face of them. Measure down roughly 3.94" inches from the hatch line to where the wing bolts are to be located. Drill these holes slightly oversized to allow fine adjustments when setting the incedence. Wayne and I used his Digital level and zeroed up the fuse. Then we took robart incedence meters and attched them to the wings - and laid the digital meter on it - adjust the wing to match the fuse - glue the anti rotation discs into place.

Before I forget - here are some shots of the hatch with the birch ply glued in place over the mounting tabs.

After I set the wing incedence and while I had the wings in place - I proceded to set up the aileron servos through the Powerbox. I set the ailerons to achieve 4" travel from center line of TE to center line of aileron TE - with provisons to add more if needed (most likely dont). There is an aileron 'robart pin hinge' mod that I am going to do as well - basically this med style pin hinge (1ea) will placed at the IB root of the aileron, this will assist in preventing aileron hinge wear and tear over time...more on that later. 1.5" servo arms were used with 8711 servos.

I went ahead finsihed off the stabs as well. Two each aluminum tubes are used and the builder must secure the stabs to these tubes...similar how a comp-arf plane or wooden built up planes with a set screw being tapped into place on the underside of the stab. You must glue (I used JB Weld) half a dowell (or a whole dowell) inside the tube (roughly an 1" long)
Be sure to put both tubes in th fuse first and measure from the fuse out to the end of the tubes - insuring of equal distance and make a pencil mark on the tube. Take the tube and place into one of the stabs to the mark you just made...drill a pilot hole through the stab into the tube and tap for a 4-40 screw. Remove and use thin CA to harden up the threads, do the same for the other tube and then assemble onto the fuse. Flip the fuse over so it is now belly side up. Slide the other stab in postion, transferring the length of the tube onto the stab - measure roughly 3/8" to 1/2" in from the end of the tube and drill holes to accomodate the 4-40 screws. CA the threads and your done. Run servo wires up to the front and set the throws.

Secured the stabs onto the fuse and ran the servo leads up to the front. I also set up the rudder servos through the Powerbox, and Wayne wrapped up the fuel tank by doing all the plumbing work on it. Tomorrow, I want to make a box and secure in place to set up the throttle servo and get the wheel pants and landing gear cuffs out of the way. If I get that done I am going to final install the engine and canisters.

Man Joe, that is just amazing, I know the next one will be easier for me after getting through the first one and knowing what I learned and how to....you make it look so easy lol.
Im tellin ya what, burning the midnight oil has finally got me, you guys are gonna laugh at me now. I back a few weeks ago order two McFueler fuel dots, really NICE ! Last night, I took one of them setting at the bench, out of the package to use to mark the piece of ply i was going to put on the inside of the fuse, I marked the ply, laid the fuel dot housing down, cut my holes in the ply and went up stairs to eat. I didnt go back down to the basement as I was whooped. I get Bren up Saturday morning, go to the basement to continue from where i had left off. I go to looking, NO fuel dot !!! My ruler is laying there, mechanical pencil, the piece of ply i cut, its all laying there except for the fuel dot....I cant even find the cap or the 6 screws, just an empty package laying there....how in the world did 8 seperate pieces disapear ? I have went over and over my work bench where i was setting last night, along with the rest of the area and I cant find one single piece of it ! I dont know whats going on, maybe a mouse in my basement is collecting shiney things lol. Im really agrevated that i cant find that fuel dot or any one of the 8 pieces to it. You guys ever loose something like that ? |

I'll have to admit again this build thread is an award winner IMO. The pictures are great, the instructions clear and concise. I'll make a nomination for a builders award Joe - if nominations are how awards at FG are presented.

A guy at our club just finished one and I believe he told me around 32lbs. I know it flys like a kite. It was climbing in a harrier at idle in 10-12mph winds this weekend.

32 pounds on a 39% Katana ? MAN ! Right now without batteries or the rudder setup, ours is setting at about 36 1/2 pounds with a DA 150 with Grieves pipes using all 8711 servos.
