Hello,
I just ordered a EF Extra 88". I have seen a few with the es composite pipe installed. Was wondering if I could get some detailed photos of the install along with mods made to the fuselage. Also what was the part number or is their only one available, and what header did you use. Any insight by those that have done this mod would be very helpful. I am building with a DA50, Futuba 9156's all around, 23A Vess, Carbon Spinner and A123's on rec and ign Thank you |

I have the ES pipe in the 88" Yak. I could take some pics of it if you think it will help, I'm going to guess that both planes are similar inside.

Ken,
The ES pipe installation is very easy and is covered in the instructions. The plane is setup for a pipe, no fuselage modifications are needed. When you get it you'll see on the firewall that the tunnel is already open, all you need to do is cut the covering at the rear of the tunnel on the bottom of the fuse. The header is a 25mm drop, I would recommend a solid header since the flex headers seem to loosen up over time. You can get this from Troy Built Models or direct from Desert Aircraft, I don't think Chris is selling them but you could call and ask just to be sure. You'll need to make a pipe mount as seen in the instructions, or you can get one already made from one of the two companies I already mentioned. If you call or email ES he'll let you know exactly which pipe you need. You should be able to get away with one mount, installed about 1 1/2 to 2 inches behind the tunnel opening at the rear exit area, that will be almost centered on the pipe and still allow enough room for air to exit. The only hole I cut in the cowl was for the head of the engine, there's no need for an air exit since it will escape through the tunnel. This makes for a very nice clean looking installation. Good luck with the plane, I'm sure you're going to love it. Lee

There you go Ken, just cut that bottom open and you can see it's a perfect fit.

Hey guys -- I know this is an old thread... but did you ever have any problems with your zip tie melting?
I am going to try using the zip tie in silicone tubing method tonight, but read one thread where the guy said no way. How did it work out for you? I have a da-50 / es comp pipe just like you describe. Thx. Dan |

I used silicone gasket maker and laid a thin one inch layer around the pipe where i was going to install the mount. I used tubing as krayzc did. No problem so far. The mount from Dave Brown Props makes the job real simple. When you install the mount do not used the wood srew as it will vibrate loose and is tto short to begin with. I use a 4-40 bolt and lock nut.
ES Composites sells the solid header and silicone connector and clamps. Get the whole set up from him. Download the manual from the EF site and the explanation is there as well. |

I USED THE DAVE BROWN PIPE MOUNT, ITS THE EASIEST WAY TO MOUNT THE PIPE. PUT GLO-FUEL TUBING AROUND THE ZIP TIE.
