My tailwheel mount broke loose or more specifically the bulkheads that the bracket mounts to, broke loose from the fuselage sheeting/stringers. I would definitely "beef up" this area.

OOPS....also just saw i am a year late....lol.
Better late than never! Thanks for the information. I'm not familiar with Likeline retracts. Are they still being made? Your tip about the tail wheel mounting is exactly the kind of information I was hoping for. Thanks Did you build in a lot of reinforcement elsewhere? How do you like the flying characteristics of the plane? How does it stall and land at 40 lbs.??

As of last year Hank Likes was still selling his retracts. He lives up my way and I see him around now and then. I'll see if I can find his number and post it. As I said, they are heavy...~10lbs with wheels and battery pack and are not cheap but are strong and great realism....slow retraction and extension...~5-7 seconds....COOL! as mentioned in a previous post the wing should be strengthened a bit....especially in the retract mount ribs.

Mine flys very nice at 40lbs. As I said...a bit under powered with the Q75 currently in it. It slows down very nice on landing BUT....you need to keep the nose DOWN and a few clicks of throttle on before flairing. I was reminded of this last year!!! I have mainly been flying the big aerobatic ARF's the past several years that land like a FEATHER and made the mistake of landing the P51 like that. Well the wings started stalling, wobbling a few feet off the ground and I hit the ground hard on one wheel....It ripped out the retract unit. Minor damage to the wing and none to the gear so it will be an easy fix.....

10 pounds does sound heavy but I wonder what other big gear sets (with wheels) air tanks, hoses and servos weigh? I would be interested in getting more information about the gear. Please post info here so others can check it out a well. It sounds like it lands like a warbird! I am worried about doing the same thing (slowing down too much) because I also fly mainly big, light IMAC planes.

I just recently acquired what sounds like the same kit as ya'll. I was/am a little disappointed with the instructions. I have never build anything this big and was hoping for more pictures in the instructions. I would greatly appreciate anyone's help if they do have something with pictures and potentially compensate. Please show pitty to the noob and spare a little help.

I started this thread because my kit did not have any instructions at all! Thankfully one of the great people on FG came through and now I have the 3 or 4 typewritten pages. I knew that the old Bud Nosen kits didn't come with much so I wasn't surprised. I hope that you have built several kits before. If so then this plane follows most of the 'normal' building procedures - its just on a bigger scale. The biggest hurdle is the fact that you will not be powering this bird with the tiny motor that it was originally designed for. A bigger motor means more weight, more speed and way more stress on the whole structure. If you were to build as designed and then throw in a 80cc gasser you are asking for a disaster. Unless you are comfortable with not only building from just a set of plans AND designing/modifying structures where necessary for the increased power, my advice is that you might want to put this kit aside for a bit.

Does anyone still have the instructions to the Nosen P-51? I am in need of a set. Can you attach them to a post?

Thanks Trumpetman,

I received the instructions and they are very helpful even if they are short. Anything helps when your making a plane out of what seems to be a lumber yard !

Hey All,,
I bought a used Nosen P-51.
I had to rebuild the friewall, and replaced all the servos and linkage, wiring ect.
It looks like the landing gear was ripped out at one time and repaired.
The entire plane was glassed also.
I installed a 7.3 Husky engine,, the engine weighs 9.54 lbs and has a claimed 8.4 HP..
The engine it had when I got it was a 4.2 sachs that weighed 4.68 lbs.
The guy I bought it from said it was a 5.2, and my friend had some motors laying around and thats how I ended up with the 7.3 Husky
Power wise it compares to a DA-85, wieght wise much heavier..
I wanted to know if anyone had plans for the wing that I could get a copy of.
I would like to build a new stronger wing, as I do not know how this one was built or if it was beefed up anywhere.
I also need to know what the CG is, so I can balance it out correctly.
Currently, the plane weighs 46 lbs with the 7.3 Husky.
Just to make sure, this is a 102 wing span.
Thanks for any help or info..

One thing you gotta love about nosen kits...instructions are as follows. arrived one large block of balsa wood, 7 feet long, 8 feet wide, 2 feet high....instructions, using a razor plane, utility kniife, exacto knife and chainsaw, carve a P51 mustang until it looks the one in the picture. End of instructions!
