I just picked up a used Hangar-9 Extra 330S and was wondering what would be the best engine for it. It was flown with a DA100 but I was looking at the DA85. Moving up from 50cc and would like to do the best thing. Big price jump from The DA85 to DA100 but would the 85 be enough for this airframe. or just suck it up and get the 100. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(Sorry for the double thread but thought I would throw in the poll on this one)

The only one I've actually seen fly had a ZDZ 80 up front, and this was before the "super 80" was released. It flew very well - light on the wings with plenty of power for agressive 3D flying. I'd say go with the 80 and keep it as light as you can. Spend a little extrs $ on a CF tube, spinner, tail/main gear and keep your radio and power components light, as well. I'm sure you'll be pleased with everything except needing to cut the cowl for the jug to hang out the bottom.

Yes the DA 85 would be the way to go. Like you know already the 85 is very close to the numbers of the 100 and over a pound lighter. My flying buddy had the 33% hangar 9 extra with DA 100 and it was too much at full throttle. It was the only big aerobat that I have seen pick up speed going vertical. I say save the money and get the 85.

I am running A DA 85 on a H-9 Edge and the power is perfect for that plane. I bought it used from a guy that had a 100 in it and it is a much better flying plane now with the 85 in it.

Definitely 85.
Seen one fly a couple weeks ago on a 3w 80cc twin and it didn't do too bad. With the WAY stronger and lighter DA you will be good to go. |

I'd go DA85. For power take a look at my video below. Mine is on a KS1090 pipe in my 35% AW 260. I have 6600 on a 28x10" Mej so more power than the DA100, but the piped DA setup is way more potent than the stock setup. Setup weighs 6lbs but that is due to the header and pipe. Still about the same price as a DA100 with no muffs.
Also consider that the DA85 will have more vibration than the DA100. If you are going stock muffs, just get the DA85 and you'll keep her nice and light! If you are going to run the DA85 on stock muffs, run it on the 27x10 Mej once broken in.

A question here...
Which type of flight do you enjoy more? I'm flying the H9 35%-DA 85 combo for 3D and it climbs pretty good. Soooo light: 23 pounds dry. . It feels like it could catch a thermal...!Believe me... I fly at 8000+ feet over sea level. However for pattern purposes I like much more an H9 35%- DA 100 combo. DA85 & 35% doesn't feel as solid as the heavier configuration. Wind gusts just shake the plane like a toy. IMHO you need to settle down what type of flight you like the best in order to make the choice that will fit you best. If you like te 85cc option, well, Sprice50 is right... It DOES vibrate...! A bit of locktite in screws will help a lot. Good luck!

I have been flying mine with a TOC 3W-75Ius and its a great flying plane so the 85 would be fine. The plane wasnt exactly designed with a 100cc engine in mind although many people have used them and even some of the magazine reviews used a 100cc motor. The H9 Extra isnt exactly "light" compared to say my 110" Extreme Flight Yak so its not a bad flying plane in the wind. It really comes down to what you want to do with the plane.....

Thank's for the info, but I have already put the new DA100 on it with a Vess27B and it is awesome. I am learning 3D and the extra power is wonderful to have. Still light and the best flying plane I have ever had. I tries the TBM 27-10 prop and it was real sluggish. As soon as the Vess prop went on I could tell a huge difference. As I said thanks again.

Try the 28x10Mej. It is quiter and has better upline pull out of a hover than the 27b. The 27B is easier for hovering though (less mass).
Also regarding the comment re weights of aircraft. It is easy enough to strap an extra 1lb or two into an airframe to simulate a 100cc vsw 85cc glider guys call it ballast.
