JPrc, BOSSIER ROB and to everyone else, it seems that my memory didnt serve me correct. I had to confer with the gentleman holding the telemetry meter while we were doing the run up. 6400ish was what it read. Not 6850. Sorry guys. I apologize for that.

Jason,
When we want your opinion we will give it to you. I agree though I would have liked to try some bigger props but just didnt have the time.

Tony - DA:

Is the 170 a straight drop in to a Dalton Extra 260 with a current DA150? If not, what modifications are needed (ie. any changes to the baffling, etc)? Finally, Tony, will your carbon cannisters that I have on my current setup work with the 170 or do I need to move to Greves pipes or mufflers?

Thanks

Greg

That was probably in the air. But I believe the 6400ish on the ground. This engine is truely a powerhouse and, like its half brother, the 85, it really likes to breathe through tuned pipes or cans.

Telemetry from various flights and temperatures over the weekend shows:
On the ground min peak 6,390, max peak 6,460
In the air on extended verticals (2,000 ft +) min peak 6,400, max peak 6,640
In air max peak 6,880 ( Probably Shulman...!)
What's it mean? Just a fun weekend flying. My "personal opinion"- Comparing internet rpm numbers with other internet rpm numbers is entertaining at best. Different engines, different break-in procedures (piston ring health, etc), different needle settings, different exhaust systems, different header lengths, differences between props (even same brand/labeled size), different fuel qualities, different lubrication, different planes, different cowl shapes, different spinner diameters, different tachs, different altitudes, different air temperatures, different humidity levels, different agendas, pride of ownership, etc can add up to some BIG discrepancies.... Fly what gives you the biggest smile, the most often.

One other thing I wanted to tell you guys. I spoke with Quique right after he flew the DA170, he told me he could not believe the power! He was so excited on the phone that was talking about the engine NON-STOP. He told me he had to throttle down in many maneuvers as he felt it was too much power for his 120”.

He will be flying same plane and engine at TopGun. Those who will be there, will see what he’s talking about. Hopefully someone will get us some video too!

Regardless of all the possible differences those are some impressive numbers.

I dont know about Tone loces carbon cannisters or any cans for that matter, but it will drop straight in. If you have the baffleing you will need to dremel it down a little because you will need to extend the engine out another 1/4 in or so because its lighter than the 150. It just depends on how your current setup balances out. Mine was neutral to a shake on the tail side so I pushed it out another 1/4 inch. You should also use the 70mm drop headers for the 170 because of the design of the 260 cowling on the bottom. They are not the same as the 150.

I also had a chance to get my hands on the sticks of the 170 and all I can say is lots of power, smooth transition, Idle is VERY smooth. When I pulled a vertical upline it kept pulling even after two upline snaps, it didn't even hesitate or slow down. I think that the setup was killer. Just my two cents and actual stick time on it.

Seems like it's debut is looking positive. Now here's the real question. When do these hit the market? I'm ready to buy a new motor and had hopes that the 170 would be out and getting some good reviews by dozens of folks by the time I had my new plane, but I'm not sure how much longer I can wait. I hate to buy a new 150 and then the 170s become readily available for a few hundred bucks more. It's time to let us in on the secret. What's the average rpm/hp on stock exhaust, on cans, which cans, on pipes, which pipes, how much will it cost, and when can we buy one? Hope that's not asking too much. I'm just anxious I guess. Thanks in advance for anyone who can answer some of these questions.
