Default Bill Hempel's J-3 Clipped Wing Cub 50%

Web: http://www.billhempel.com/

I ordered the plane for a friend, after 10 days belgian customs finally released the Cub:

Called some dudes to get their hands dirty

Next to a C-ARF Extra 2m60

This is the first time we had to lie underneath a modelplane to fit the landing gear

The wheels are pointing a bit outwards, hope this is not going to be a problem...

The engine, a 3W 170xi

This is it!

Maybe this gets us on National Geographic Channel

Bill,
the plane looks great and arrived in perfect condition!

I already got a few Q's
Where's the CG on the Cub, and what throw and expo do you use?
Did you mount the rudder servo's in the tail, or do you use pull-pull (3 servo's ?)

Gr Wim

Gaaaz,

I am sure Bill will reply soon, but I know he uses the pull-pull with 3 servos in the cockpit area. Just Keep all the components as far forward as you can.
If I remember right, he CG'd the plane 30% back from the leading edge.
We did alot of weight shifting on the plane to fly it in an IMAC event and no matter what we did the plane never displayed any bad habbits.
Hope this helps untill Bill gets a chance to answer.

This sure helps alot, it's easier to build a plane if you know where to put the weight...

Thanks,

Gaaaz

I received my 50% 260 after some similiar delays with Customs and a storeman's stop work meeting!

Also question where is the Cg on the 260??

But I tell ya these BH models are a class act.................just waiting for the rain to stop so i can take pic's...............I don't have the luxury of a large w/shop!

Hello!

Wow, I am so proud that my airplanes are finally arriving to customers! Thank you for making this build thread here on FG.

For the Cub, I originally used 3 servos for the rudder but now I am only using 2 servos. This seems to be working fine. mount your rudder servos in the fuslage in the front two holes provided and run the pull/pull.

This plane has a very long tail moment and you need to mount everything as far forward as possible. I am using 4 pounds of weight in the nose to balance the plane. ExtPlt is correct that the CG is around 30% maybe it is further back to about 40%??? I know the more weight I remove from the nose the furthur back the CG has gone. I have not measured the CG after removing the last 1.5 pounds from the nose.

Ailerons; there are provisions to use 3 servos per aileron. I have removed 1 per side and am only using 2 servos per aileron without any problems.

Use caution with the axles in the plane. The material is not the best and can bend easily with a hard landing or a bad "one-wheel" touch and go. I would recommend replacing the axles with harder material if it is avialable in your area. I am not sure why your landing gear has a little "tow-out", we'll see if it is just your gear or if they are all like that. Shouldn't cause any issues and as a last resort the axle could be bent forward to correct this if it becomes an issue. Just something for me to take note of and make sure this is corrected if it is fleet wide for the next container.

Did you get the "dummy cylinders" for the cowling?

Throws: Use as much as you can get on the ailerons. I am using 1.5" servo arms but will change them out for 2" servo arms for the ailerons. For elevators I am using 1.5" arms and all is good. I have triple rates selected on the transmiter starting with about 20 degrees throw and going up to maximum throw avialable on high rates.
Rudder, get as much as you can, the rudder will hit the elevator at full deflection, that is a good place to stop.

Expo: I used 25% for low rates and 40% for high rates.

I need to supply you with cotter pins/washers (cowling) and bungee's for the gear.

I will add more info as you need it!

Good luck and enjoy "The biggest and Best ARF in the WORLD"!

Bill Hempel

Thanks for the reply!

We did get the dummy cylinders, just forgot to mount them for the pics...

We'll see how the wheels work out..maybe we'll have to change and bend the axles

We did had to sand the carbon fiber wing tube to get it to fit, we also had to do that with the Edge.

I'll post some more pics once we got all the gear

Anyone knows where to get a (scale)spinner for the Cub?

Setup:

Engine: 3W 170xi TS, pefa cannisters
Prop: 32x10 Menz for break in, after ?
Servo's: Hitec 5955TG (we're gonna have to make the servo holes slightly bigger to fit them, guess they're made for futaba)
Power: Powerbox Royal, powerbox batteries 2800mAh
Tx: Graupner/JR MX-22 with 2.4 GHz DSM2 spektrum module
Rx: 2x 2.4Ghz receivers (AR9000)

The Edge hasn't flown...we're gonna build it together with the Cub once we have all our stuff
Last week the 3W 170 was bought at a convention in Dortmund, Germany, this week we gonna get the 3W 275 TS Combo, also in Germany http://www.flugschau.de/webshop/index.php
Setup for the Edge is pretty much the same as for the Cub

I'll keep you guys up to date!

You are going to like that Edge with the 275 on it my buddy Mike has the edge and the extra 260 both have the 275 and that is the best running motor 3W has ever made ! Tons of power and they run great and just keep getting better ! Mike and I put his 260 together in about 4 days ,,,,,, boy that is a well designed kit and it flies great also .
