Default Re: Servos for Lanier Yak 54

Thanks for everyone's input on an engine for the Lanier Yak 54. If I can afford it, I'm hoping to get the ZDZ 80 for it. Now, I'd really appreciate some advice regarding what control surface servos to use for this plane. I know I have to go with high torque servos. I'm not sold on digitals yet; they are great, but do I really need to spend that amount of money when I'm not into competition and just beginning to learn 3D? The numbers of choices for servos on the market gives me sensory overload, and a lot difficulty in making a choice! What servos do you think would give the best bang for the buck on this airplane? (By the way, on my 1.20 to 1.80 sized glow planes I've had good success with JR Sport 126MG's which cost $35 each, and give 126 oz./in. with metal gears. But I know I'm going to have to buy something a little better for the Yak.) Thanks.

This will be my first giant scale/gasser project, so I have a lot of questions. I have flown an old, heavy, 90" Diablo with a Quadra 52 in it. I bought it from a guy in our club about 10 years ago. It's so old, slow, gentle, and heavy that I had my 6-year-old grandson flying it on a buddy box last summer!

I'm pretty sure I can get mine below 19 lbs. with a Brillelli 366.

Lighter planes fly so much better.

My 50cc weighs 18 lbs and hovers at half throttle with a DL-50... It's not a bit under powered.
I know the point you are trying to make, but you are using a few exceptions in a broad class of planes. I can tell you that the 87" Lanier Yak is not your typical 50cc size plane. This Yak has a typical 50cc span of 87" (Which appears to be what you are focused on.), .. yet it has much more chord and fuse size than most 50cc planes. This plane has 1468 inches of wing area .. (Close, but a little outside the box), and again, that is normally 60-70cc size wing area. Also, .. until you actually hold or see one in person .. you won't get how big the fuse is. The fuse is broad, wide and thick from tip to tail. You mentioned the Extreme Flight models at 88". These are clearly the exceptions. I own the 88" EF Extra and they are extremely lightly built "flying" planes in order to hold the weight down. It has 1450 square inches of area . I heard lots of people say the EF 88" Yak is really a 33% size plane. The others that you mentioned have the typical 50cc size wing area. Aeroworks 260 = 85" -1270" .... Dietrich 260, 85' = 1390", Wildhare Extra & Edge 1350" & 1390" ... but the thing is ... the Lanier Yak Fuse swamps all these in size.

The Lanier Yak is like a bigger Yak with clipped wings. If it carried wings proportionate to its fuse size (Like other Yaks do ..), .. it would have about 1550 square inches. I stand by my statement that this plane is larger than most typical 50cc size planes. Also remember ... that the planes you mentioned are all on the large end of 50cc. I have a 50cc Katana that has 1230 sq. inches, and there are many others on the smaller end. I believe 50cc to typically serve the 1200 - 1400 size wing areas. I believe 80cc to serve the 1500 - 1800 size, and 100cc to be 1800 - 2100 typically. seems if you fall into any of the gaps you either need a little, .. or got a little bit much.

The guy that I know that had the 94" version was flying it at 21 lbs, 12oz. I'm not sure about the 87" version. My 94" has 1729 squares and is powered by a 100cc twin. Haven't weighed it yet.
