Has anyone had a problem in an installation where the receiver is not directly exposed to the sun? It seems all I've seen is installations where the receiver is under an open canopy.
I have a black patriot 40 size with a 617 rx and 5 cell batt, I flew it 4 times this morning no problems, right now is 89F.

I have the Patriot seating on my driveway under the sun now for 1.5 hours and still working.

By the way, the rx is in the middle of the fuselage.

It is a purely temperature related problem. There was no direct sunlight in the oven.

I see, I have a 608 that needs to go into my Compy sometime, and was considering possibly mounting it on the bottom of the radio tray to keep it out of direct sunlight. I can also drill a couple small holes in the motor dome to allow some cooling air to come into the fuse. The open space for my rudder cables should allow some airflow.

Good point Jurgen.

Was there any pasta in the oven?

What is the temperature of your fuselage? The rx will fail at approx. 70°C (158°F). If your fuselage does not reach those kind of temperatures, you won't experience any problems.

Update:

After more then two hours and three beers later (92F), the Patriot is still working, good enough for me with this application.

I have my Raptor 50 Titan (Heli) under the sun now rx facing the sun.

Jurgen, sorry man I forgot to get the temp from the fuselage and the plane is under AC already.

Hi Doug, It's my opinion that the issue here directly concerns the Futaba R6014FS receivers. I don't know how other Futaba 2.4mhz receivers are affected. I've done some testing with these receivers (R6014FS) in my aircraft already. I'm more convinced that the failures are a temperature related issue, and placement in the aircraft is of secondary concern. True, most all reported incidents involve large scale planes with the receivers installed directly under the canopies where direct sunlight is shining upon them. This, of course, can contribute to the overall temperature in side the aircraft. I will be doing more testing today with the receivers sheilded from sunlight and post my results when I get finished. The ambient heat alone created inside the aircraft while the engine is running may again cause the receivers to fail. And by the way, I use canister mufflers and my canisters are well vented underneath and can not vent into the aircraft. The outside temp here today is supposed to reach the 90's so I think my tests will be indicative of what we can expect to happen with these receivers this summer.

I was using the Futaba R5014DPS receivers with my 12Z radio on 72 mhz prior to purchasing this new 2.4ghz system. Never had one of them fail due to temperature inside the aircraft or placement of such.

Previous post.

We have a hot day here today, around 27 C at the moment.
My Hawk has been sitting out on the patio for around 1 hour now, switched on.

The canopy is very hot (as you would expect) but the rx is in the fus around 3 inches below that.
So far no issues at all, and the rx does not feel warm to the touch.

I will keep checking over the next hour.

I can further report that after 2 more hours under the sun the rx worked perfectly.

There is no doubt that this is a temperature issue it has been proven, but placing the rx under the canopy will just force a massive temp rise in it and cause it to fail.

Consider how hot it gets in a car with the windows closed and no air circulation.
The green house effect is well known.

I have said before, why do you guys not get the rx out of the canopy?
Just have the 2 rx aerial ends in it and get the rx out of harms way.

It will be interesting to hear what component turns out to be the temperature sensitive one that is causing these failures. Once they identify what is failing the next step will be to determine why. Is it a bad run, all of them, etc.

I have lived in some very hot areas and I always wondered about the high temps my radios were exposed to. I always tried to cover them to keep the sun out.

One thing I think would be interesting for somebody to do is to take a plane that they are getting the RX to fail on with the plane in the sun with the canopy on and place it in the same spot and take the canopy off. Most are part of the hatch. This will tell us how much the greenhouse effect has to do with causing high temps inside the fuse.

By my calculations that should be another three beers.

If I were Doug, by this point I'd be asleep on the couch.

LOL.

The max temp on the Raptor's rx (617) was 131F, only for an hour under direct sun since I was concern for my other equipment, It's really hot down here today 93F and humitity is bad.

I have DF Jet (StarFireII) that has the 608 rx in it, I'll see if I have time tomorrow to test it.

Regards,
Doug.

That aside, this morning I used a heat gun to try and induce the problem, and could not get it to shut down, I did not have a temp gun, but I did get the RX a lot hotter than I would feel comfortable with (very, very hot to touch) So I personally feel comfortable using the system, I remove the canopy from the plane whilst sitting on the ground and park it in the shade, so that removes the baking effect on the ground.
Thats the way to do it,better than complaining, look for a solution,i was thinking in doing that to my 28% and going back to the good old foam wrapping.i will get some good old solar film for the canopy too.

1st pic shows the position of RX and the relationship to the duct on the outside of the fuse, others just show what I used, I openned up a hole most of the size of the duct, which is simply a 3W cable exit guide facing forward.
