Low and slow- How I roll
![]() |
I'm no stranger to building and setting up foamys to fly straight and true, but I recently have noticed my DW Foamies Yak 54 has been acting strange in flight, like when I loop it, it couples to the right, and when I try outside loops, it couples violently. I'm confused to this. It's only 15 oz, and has around 160 watts of power, and is balanced latteraly, so those can't be casuing the problems.
Could it be something with the elevator? I'm confused here, so I need some help as what to do. Also, I got an HS55 on the ailerons that is "twitchy", and acts up whenever I give it left aileron. Will Hitec fix this for free, even in the scratched and glued up condition it is in right now?

I fly a DW YAK and it is a great, neutral flying plane. A plane doesn't change the way it flies for no reason. Something has changed on your plane. That twitchy servo could be doing things in the air. Hitech is great about customer service. I have never had them charge for a repair of any kind.
Check your elevator to make sure that it hasn't cracked in the thin area that joins the elevator halves. I have had this happen. Also check the motor mount area to make sure your motor is not moving in flight. We just went through a record heat wave in San Diego. I have seen Depron warp, and or lose it's stiffness when left in very hot cars. Check to see if everything is still straight, and as ridged as it used to be. Also check to see if your hinge tape is still holding as it should. excessive heat can cause it to degrade as well. |

To add to Steve's post, check the ailerons. If one gets more slop or flexes more under load it can cause roll when pulling g's.

Probably a sevo or program problem. I broke the nose of mine three times in two days glued it back and it still flew straight. My friend had a similer problem and he accibently hit a switch that added mix to the plane. But my guess is that when the bad servo is under load its creating blowback wich will give you a pretty bad couple when under pressure. Try doing a gentle light big loop it should reduce the effect, the harder you pull the worst it will get if that's the issue.

Yup, that's what happens snap. Big loops, no problem. Tight loops, coupling. I know the servo has more than enough torque to torque the surface (21oz. in.), and nothing has warped. Its been in my room for the past few heat waves, and nothing has happened to it. Checked everything, and still can't figure it out. Huh, snap, if we could meet up some time, you could take it for a spin.

Xpress,
Some afternoon after school or the weekend, stop by and I'll take care of your problem. We know that it is not the design, it's most likely is a servo problem. I can also check out your Gen-X and let you know which one you have. BTW- This weekend is the Red Bull Races, I'll most likely be down there watching them trim the pylons. Mike www.DWFoamies.com |

Slightly off topic here but mine's doing the same thing and I think it's the servos....
I used some E-Flite's I had around here and there's a bunch of slop in two of them already, so since I've not had good luck removing servos attached to foam with hot melt glue, anybody got any hints on the best way to get 'em off so I can change them out??? |

HS-55's are notorious for the centering going south after time. If a servo is jittering on the ground it will also do it under flight loads. That causes pretty bad trim issues. My Tiger Yak is still flying well after all these months so the airframe is not an issue. Check slop in your control linkages and swap out that bad servo.
