Default My AW QB 75cc Extra 260

Here is my all new AW QB 75cc Extra 260

I know there is a lot of them out there now, but this one is mine ;-) This is my first large scale 3D plane so it should be interesting ;-)

All is done now and it’s loaded in the trailer awaiting its test flight. She came in at 21 lbs with a ZDZ 80 Super mounted to the nose. I tried to keep the weight down, one thing I did was to use a 2-56 pull rod for the choke instead of a servo.

Is there anything I need to look out for upon the test flight of this bird?

I have all my control throws set as per specs. I plan to maiden her on low rates. One thing that is happening that I don’t like is with the idle of the engine. It will idle all day long, however; when returning to an idle from full throttle the RPM’s drop dramatically. I have to blip the throttle to assist the engine to retain its idle. I have about 1 gallon of fuel ran through it and have adjusted the mixture settings a few different ways to try to better the situation. I also have programmed in the “idle down” switch to have a higher idle during flight…

Has anyone else had to deal with anything like this?

Other than that, I am really happy with the entire package! Here is a few photos of her. Let me know what you think…

Here's an mpeg of her first run...

Not the final rigging but close to it...

In the photos was an MPI spinner. I have since taken it off and used one off another plane. The MPI backing plate is convex, and it started to dish the back side of the prop more and more not letting it seat properly...

Yeah, be prepared to FALL IN LOVE!!!
Really not a bad setup on your part for your first venture into giant scale. I like that you are confident enough in your soldering to make exact-length leads - I do the same thing!
If the ZDZ is new, make sure you get it tuned propery - this goes with any engine, but especially singles, as poorly-tuned engines vibrate that much more.
21 pounds is a respectable weight, and it will be a REAL floater. with the proper CG, it slows down to a crawl on landings.

I can't wait! I'm just waiting on the weather now Rain yesterday, 20 + MPH winds today...

I usually twist my own wires too, I guess I did get a little lazy this time and just bought some pre made 48" extensions and whacked the ends off.
I did spend some time running and tunning the engine. I did this with the cowling off then on, at one point it would run perfect with the cowling off, then with the cowl on the low side got slightly lean. So I went back and forth a few times with that.

Question:
I adjusted the high side on the rich side of course right? However, I closed it just enough to clean up the burble in it. Will this be sufficient enough fuel for it once in the air?

I have the CG set up as per specs for the test flight. The battery packs are up against the wing tube (not pictured above) so I have plenty of room to aft the CG

OK I was able to maiden her today, 2 clicks down, and three clicks left and she was set (at the given balance point)
All can say it that she's just a big kite I did two 8 minute flights just to test things out. The motor ran pretty much flawlessly! No dead sticks!!! I also found that the idle in the air is A LOT different vs. being on the ground. I had to lower the idle in flight even more to slow down for my landings (no head wind and a forward balance point though)

I do have some dialing in to do though. When pulling vertacle from a slow speed climb she does not have tremendous power. Being a new motor I have it on the rich side with a 32:1 lawnboy mix tach'ing 5,700 on a Bambula 26 x 10. I see many say they're tach'ing over 6k? Maybe once broke in a little then on 40:1 mix leaned a tad she'll pull ballistic?

I have to re check the spark plug seat. I noticed oil spitting out around the seat, I pulled out it to check the seat and the cap ring. All checks good, I reinstalled it and made it just a LITTLE tighter so we'll see?
Time to aft the CG

Nice SK, all I can say is once you get into the gassers you won't like messing with the glow stuff anymore.

Where are the wheel pants???? Looks naked with them still in the box. Looks like you have a great handle on what it takes to have a great flying Giant Scale bird.

Yea I hear that! I've always fallen back to glow for the convenience, mainly transporting. However, this time around I purchased a brand new enclosed trailer Now I can keep everything loaded and ready to roll at a moments notice! You get your new plane lined up yet?

I took my pants off

I had em on pretest flight, but with this maiden it was also my first time flying on grass. The kit comes with dinky foam type 3 1/4" wheels. Being new to grass I put on a set of 4" Sky Lites.

Well I got two more flights in this evening, the motor is running flawless with under 2 gallons of fuel through it at the moment. Still dialing in the plane some though, I still need more aft CG. I move the battery packs back A little each time out.

As far as power goes, it has gobs of it. However it is currently lacking power from hover pull out. I hope the Vess "A" prop and break in time will cure that. Pulling up to verticle from level flight the dang thing is just out of sight!!!

So far I'm having a blast just setting it up
