I spent 3 hours trying to get my DA 100 (new version) to run. I only got it to start 3 times in that time frame; and when it does run, it runs like cr*p.
The application is in a Hangar 9 260. The fuel tank is on top of the wing tube in this installation. The first thing I noticed that was unusual was durring fueling. I run a 2 line tank with a "t" and fuel dot in the line that goes to the carb. Fuel will run out of the carb when I'm fueling through the fuel dot. I've run Walbro carbs before and never had this issue. In fact fuel continues to run out of the carb at almost the same rate when I'n not fueling. Once I get the engine started it really runs bad (the needles are 1/8 turn rich of the factory rec settings..this is how the engine was shipped). I've leaned the low needle 1/8 turn with little improvement. But here is where it gets funny. With the engine obviously running rich; when I go to full throttle it quits; as if it is lean. I mean it stops just after the RPM's get above (I'm guessing) 5500-6000 RPM. I checked the most obvious: spark is good battery at 6.3 volts all connections good I think I have a carb issue... Any ideas? Thanks. Jim |

Jim,
I would be looking at the diaphram and how it is hooked to the metering needle. It could be that the carb was just assembled wrong. If gas is running out when fueling, it is possible that this same metering needle is not seated. If this was assembled wrong it could be holding the needle open.

My first thought .Your Diaphram needle is stuck open on your carb. Put your Hi And low screws back to factory settings and check your needle and seat on your diaphram pump.

As a further note. The fork part of the metering needle arm, as seem in the pics in the above posting, slides into the little groove in the stud of the diaphram. It does not just press against it. You actually slide it from and into this position when taking the diaphram off and onto the carb. You donot want to bend the metering needle arm as it is set with a carb guage and can cause problems also.
I have seen carbs put together wrong and has noting to do with the engine other then making them run ruff and make hard to start. Had the same issue a few years back on my nephew's new DA 150.

My DA it set up the same as yours with the fuel tank mounted high in the plane and has the same fueling issue (and has for several years). All I do when I fuel it is close the line with hemostats during fueling. That stops the fuel from flooding the carb. Then I disconnect after fueling and follow the standard starting procedure.
but that won't solve the problem of having something wrong with your carb. -Craig |

Sorry, but you should never have fuel running out of your carb on a gasoline engine when you are fueling, and fuel tank position would have nothing to do with it. I have the same plane with the same tank position and a DA 100 and never get fuel dripping out when I fuel.

This may not be your problem but in my case, in the old DA 150cc the metering bar was bent slightly to make diaphram and seat move properly with cover on for the area needed to work. The new diaphram when looking at the hole in cover diaphram was up aginst the cover sticking needle open. Made a ajustment in metering bar for new diaphram and engine leaks no more gas and engine starts and idle can go as low as you like and on stock mufflers and 32X10 mejzlic turns 6600-6700 RPM. I think that took care of my problem. The diaphram I changed because it had been in the motor for 6 yrs and over 3000 flights. But diaphram was hitting the cover. Also as stated in the thread make sure diaphram is slid into the metering bar right could just be the problem. I called Jeff about the difference in my old diaphram to the new carb kits sent to me. And that is the first DA motor not the lighten case version that was next before this version with lightened case and fins shaved. Also do call Jeff everyone knows they have A+ service and will have you straighten right up. Rich M. |

I owe all of you guys a beer!
The metering needle lever was not properly engaged in the diaphram. The engine runs (and fuels) normal now. You guys saved me a ton of time and hassles. Thanks! Jim |

Way to go guy's you were all dead on . The motor should never drip while fueling. If the diaphragm looks like its hitting the cover thats another sign of the same problem.
