Saddler announced on wendsday that there was 18 radios on 72 mhz. As far as I know it was probably the biggest test on 2.4 so far and it passed with flying colors. I don't recall any shut downs.

A picture is worth a thousand words. This is the impound area on Friday afternoon.
Nuff said.

This was something that I even commented to people about. Last year the radio impound was packed. This year the people working the impound were very bored. I had known that the impact of 2.4 was big but looking at the impound for an event with 600 registered pilots and seeing less than 20 radios in impound really drove it home. There were 3 flight areas running the Main flight line, the new 2.4 3D line, and the float fliers on the lake. Then there were boats on the lakes, RC cars, foamies. I think that this really showed the extent of 2.4 used.

I think the maximum number of transmitters they EVER had in Impound was 13-14. Kind of funny, with so few transmitters impounded, they STILL had a frequency pin issue where two channels did not have pins because someone had them and had not turned them in.
They need another choice in that poll. . .98%. It's more accurate.

I attended the Noll with Dualsky USA. I ran a DX6I and a Futaba 9cap with a 2.4 module all weekend and had no problems. There were some crashes but I didn't hear of anyone having a problem with their 2.4 radios. I also attended SEFF two weeks ago where there were 99 planes flown at the same time and they had no problems. I beleive there were 400 pilotes at SEFF and on Friday when I went by the impound to look there were only maybe 20 radios in inpound. So 2.4 works and is here to stay in my opinion.

This was one of the biggest events ever, an there was no impound for 2.4 GHz, and no problems as far as I know, which seems to show that you don’t need an impound; however, its seems to be the opinion of a lot of organizations, including some AMA officials that impound is necessary for various reasons which I won’t list, I’m sure someone will. In my opinion no impound is the way to go for all events. Did any 72 MHz pilots have a problem with not having an impound for 2.4 ? I think an impound is more trouble than its worth, and can actually cause problems. I think various organization should rethink the impound issues for 2.4 Ghz.

. Well, the most obvious reason to have an impound is because the vast majority of AMA members have been around a very long time. . . and we have always impounded our radios, all the way back to the 1843 Nats at Jurgensen Naval Base when the AMA introduced Rudder Only Pattern . . . . and the radios have always needed to be impounded before. . . and this new technology is different from the old technology. . . and different means "change". . . and we haven't changed since the '43 Nats. . . . and you new young feller's don't understand how dangerous "change" can be . . . . none of you whipper-snappers remember the Galloping Ghost and escapements do you?. . . Now THAT was a radio. . . well when we got servos, that was different from the old escapements and therefore "change", which at first was dangerous. . . so that should convince you why we cannot "change" impounding radios. . .
