According to The June issue of Model Aviation, Louie Klenkel(I think the spelling's off), at age 11 holds an AMA turbine waiver at age 11. Congrats Louie! I remember him before he started flying RC. Great kid!
Again, Congrats Louie on this accomplishment! Chris

Now you've done it..... Isn't there a four or five year old out there that flies just about everything under the sun? I'm guessing he'll have a TW by the end of the week!! LOL! WT PS: Way to go Louie! Go hyper-sonic, son! |

Actually I'm not that impressed by it. A turbine waiver is very simple to get. The manuvers required are no harder than the Basic class in IMAC, which has even younger kids flying.
There is no speed requirement, so you can fly at 1/3 throttle if you chose. You can also use any type of plane so that would mean that you can fly something very stable and easy like a glo trainer type plane. Plenty of those in the turbine world. Infact the biggest thing is cost.......at 11 the young lad has no concept of how much money is in the air. Its not like he saved up for it, so there is not an ounce of stress or fear. I do congratulate the young kid though for flying all types of aircraft. I wish I had done so at such an early age. I'm also sure the kid could probably fly circles around me. I just think its being made to big a deal is all.

Congrats to Louie (sorry if I spelled it wrong),
Does anyone know what jet he got his waiver on? I got my waiver when I was fifteen on a Reaction 54 and now I am seventeen. Andrew |

I'd like to congratulate him on his accomplishment. I met Louie at FL Jets and he is a very serious little guy and I'm sure he will be a great competitor in model aviation in the future. We need more young people like him to insure the future of our hobby/sport. "Two thumbs up for Louie"
Regards, Bill Adkins

Congrats Louie! Heck, I would have earned my waiver at age 9 if I was able to afford 10k!

i don't care if he is too young to realize the "costs" or if he could fly at 1/3 throttle through the manuvers,,,,, dude has something i don't have and i've been flying twice as long as he's been alive.
way to go louie! keep excelling at this pace in everything in your life and you will discover successes beyond belief!!!! i ABSOLUTELY love seeing the next generation get into this hobby! we truly are going great places!

Sweatpea is correct - with the right plane anybody can get their waiver. I built my son a baby boomerang - he got his waiver on his first flight . The problem now is that my son tells me that no self-respecting teenager can be seen flying a boomerang, he needs something much faster.
We met Louie and his Dad at florida jets - Louie flew really well (until Dad lost their plane while avoiding spectators on the runway not paying attention). Phil |
