Default advice on right plane for IMAC/precision

Hello everyone. Im a new member of FG. I love this place. Been reading threads till my eyes couldn`t take it anymore for a week now. I`ve been looking for a new gasser plane for a few weeks now and just cant pinpoint one. This will be my third attempt at gassers. First two crashed. I am looking for a "scale" 260 or 300 mabey yak in 50 or 85cc size (33%)? that flys like my pattern plane. Well as close as possible to a pattern ship. Most of these planes focus on 3/D so they are very floaty and huge control surfaces. I would like the focus on precision, 3/D second. I like 3/D dont get me wrong, but I want precision first. Any arfs fit the mold or do I have to go for a kit? Thanks for your time. Hope to here from you guys soon

Kevin,
The most pattern like IMAC legal scale plane I know of is the Columbo Anderson Extra 300L. This plane is stretched to the max. It still has larger control surfaces than a pattern plane, but smaller than most out there today. This is not a plane you'll see everyday, as this super stretched, style is not in vogue these days. It flies faster, and less floaty than people seem to want right now. More like a pattern ship, it draws great lines. It comes in a variety of sizes, from 27% all the way up to 38%. Bigger does fly better, so based on your request, I would try the 34%, it should be perfect with the new DA-85. You should be able to get it in around 22 to 23 pounds with the DA-85, so it will have great power. Everyone else I know who has one, has a DA-100 in it, but the 85 was not available when they built theirs. It is not widely available in the U.S., but the good news is that AeroWorks is clearing out their inventory of this model so it is on sale. Unfortunately, they are out of ARFs, but have the almost ready to cover, and kits available. At under $500.00 it is very inexpensive for a plane of this size.

Take a look here:

Try the Extreme Flight 88" Extra, it to is long as well as a little larger than most 50CC gassers. Works great with a Brilleli 60 or DA-50 and pipe.

Yes, the 75CC 260 is a very nice plane, I have the 100cc version as my freestyle plane. I fly a 40% ZN-Line as my IMAC plane. But i really think, given your original post, you would like the 34% CA better. It is about the same size in length and wingspan as the 100cc AW 260. But because it is designed thinner in wing, and fuse (more like a pattern ship), than the AW designs, it weighs a lot less, so the DA-85 will work perfectly. So given your type of flying, you will like it better. The extra size presents better in the air than a smaller plane would. Take a look at the video on AWs site. Although, it shows almost all 3-D flying, you'll notice the proportions of the plane are very pattern like. You will also notice that even the 3-D flown, is faster with longer lines than the slow harrier stuff you see in most demos.

If you are considering IMAC, then bigger will get you higher scores, so the 34% is going to work better for you.

By the way QQ now has a 33% YAK that has been optimized for the DA-85. A very good IMAC/3-D plane, but a long way from a pattern style design. Sill, also worth looking at.

You should be able to get someone to cover it for you, and still come out less than most ARF prices, considering the low price of the AW sale on the ARC.

I love Chis Hinsons designs, and EF planes in general. In fact, I have two of them. But with the large fuse, big wings, and super large control surfaces, I don't think they fit the original request as closely as some others out there. EF planes are some of my favorite huckers, but not my favorite straight line flyers.

Yes, it is one of Marcelo's designs from a few years ago. He wanted to design an IMAC legal scale plane, that flew closer to the pattern planes he is so famous for. Kinda, just what you asked for. I also believe that Chip Hide, used this design with different covering schemes for his models. Great precision planes.

I have been through the 250+ page EF 88" YAK build on RCU. Very impressive plane!!! I'm afraid its a 3D only type of flyer and may not have that locked on feel that I love in a pattern ship. But very interested in this one anyway (red and white)

A friend of mine Jeff Szueber JR. flies the CA Models Extra in IMAC. He is a world class pilot, and a frequent competitor in the Tucson Shootout in the precision Invitational class, and the Freestyle as well. He normally flies a different plane in the freestyle, and saves the CA for sequences. I think it was in 2006, he literally blew the wings off his freestyle plane, he really throws down in his freestyle. After losing his primary plane, he used his CA for freestyle as well. Here is a clip showing the freestyle with the CA. He modified his routine to suit the flying characteristics of the CA. You will see it focuses on longer lines. point rolls, and more artistic smoother lines.

Also in 2007

Jeff's brother Matt flies an electric powered Extreme Flight 88" YAK (that was mentioned earlier), as a demo plane for freestyle and loves it. It is a great plane, and a heck of a tumbling 3-D monster.

great video 1bwana1! that CA 300 is a sweet machice. I will ask a friend that flyes in our club if he would be interested in a covering job. He has done several planes including 40% cardens and the work is increadible! Mabey he will be interested in doing this for me. Is the 75cc AW QB 260 even close to the performance of this 300. I really like the look of extra 260's and the color scheme is beautiful. I would like to come in under $2500 if possible, without sacraficing quality.

All of the AW planes are great, and would be my first choice in an ARF. In fact, I would have recommended them from the start, if not for the unique requests you made in your first post. The CA is a unique design, that fit your request perfectly.

The AW planes have super quality (in my opinion the highest in the industry currently), fly great, and are the easiest builds I know of. They represent the quickest way to get flying for you. I have had two, and loved both. You willnot be disappointed in the way they fly.

Lets take a look at budget. The AW 260:

Plane - $800
Shipping - $120
Carbon Fiber Wing & Stab tubes (highly recommended) - $55
Carbon Fiber landing gear (highly recommended) - $75 ?
Spinner - $75
DA-85 - $800
Standard Muffler - $150
5 X Hitec 5955 Servos - $450
Batteries - $75
Prop - $80
Misc items (Switches, regs, servo arms, extensions, throttle servo, regulators ect.) - $300

Total is about $2980, but that is premium parts, at full retail prices, and I'm sure that with some shopping and negotiating, you could save enough to get you real close to your $2,500 number.

The CA ARC will cost you at least this much, and probably a little more by the time you collect all of the items that are included in the AW kit. The AW ARf will have you flying in a week or so (I have seen them built in two days). The CA ARC will probably take a couple of months to get in the air.

I noticed on the 34% 300 that the wings required 2 servos per aleron. that means alot more money ( 2extra servos and matchbox). probably 2 servo rudder as well. When it adds up to $3000+ I just cant do it. I love the design though. Is the wing on the 75cc 260 balsa sheeted foam? I hope so. Thanks a ton 1bwana1. I intend to use a canister and quiet prop to keep noise to a minimum, not for club requirements, just my preference. there is another $300 or more
