At work, we fabricate from both aluminum and titanium, and the color differences are similar...but we order those materials and know what they are going in. Occasionally, we have a PMI test done on material to verify the metallurgy for a customer, I'd sure like to get the servo gears PMI'd and just see what they are. Come to think of it, I have some titanium barstock here at the house, but I can't remember what grade it was, it was for an aborted attempt at machining some parts that didn't pan out.

Has anybody ever heard what Futaba claims the gears are made of?

I'll snap some pics when this last batch of 9156 get here (I have 9155 on hand).
That'll be cool.

I know there are new serovs coming out, but I'm interested in what's been in the market place and have been extensively used over the last year or so.

Let's keep this thread on track and just comment on the servos mentioned please.

I have the 5955`s (55+ flights) the 9156`s (more than 60 flights) and the 9152 with more than 60 flights too. The hitecs are in one plane and the others are in two more. The 9152 I use for rudders.
I`m currently changing the 5955s for 9156s. The hitecs are good but even with the titanium gears they don`t center like the 9156. The 9152`s are incredible for powering a rudder, I have two ganged up on a 35% SDModels YAK and they have more than eough power for that rudder, I don`t use them in anything else because of their size, I would have to enlarge the holes for elevators and ailerons, but these are great servos.
I got the hitecs because of their programmability, but now I`m using SmartFly`s EQ6 Turbos on the big planes, that way I can get any brand servos and program them through the power expander.
The 9156 gears are metal, they don`t say what kind of metal but the first gear is made of grey plastic, they are durable and strong, even got through a crash where the ailerons got the worst part and the servos were buried in the ground, took them out, checked them, and everything is ok.
I use to have JR`s 8611s and they didn`t last more than 40 flights before the gear slop showed up, so I sold them and got the 9156s.
In my little experience the futaba servos are the ones that work best for me.
just my 2 cents

Higher resolution = Higher resolution
Higher resolution does NOT = Faster

I said I'd post a pic when the 9156 came in. Now I don't have a clue what the metal is in these output shafts, but you can see the color is different between the 9155 and the 9156. Significant? Who knows, all I did was take the pic.

Welcome to the Giants, cjmoises! That's surprising to hear about your servos. Are you sure the slop is in the servos gears, or could it possibly be between the output spline and servo arm, or somewhere in your control linkage? My 9156s are still solid, and I'm using the SWB servo arms that allow you to tighten the grip on the servo spline.

BEWARE OF THE 9156's. Some have been known to roll the teeth of the top gear over thus locking the servo at full deflection. Happened at a Huckfest this year. I found the servo on one aileron fully locked at the crash site. After talking to Jason Danhakl, he said that was a problem on that servo and a memo went out. My friend is a team Futaba man that apparantly did not get the memo. We had never heard of the problem, but the top gear under the cover was indeed rolled over. Didnt break the tooth off, but layed it over.
I would investigate this thouroughly if you own the 9156's. Still is a very good servo if you got the later ones.

Explain "roll the teeth".

One tooth was almost broke off, but it was tilted over and laying next to another tooth.

I'm on my 3rd season of a set of 8711s in my Gen 3 102" Yak. No slop, no issues. 1 on the rudder, no jittering, nothing. This is all in the airplane I flew at XFC, so you can all see how hard the airplane is flown...

You know, Seth, I think it is just the luck of the draw with these servos, the 8711's at least. I am using them all around on my 42% 260. They are the same servos I installed in April, 2008, and flew in the Shootout(and you know what kind of load they endured there, what with the 40mph gusty winds).I have never had to send them in. They did develop a little slop almost immediately, but the slop has resided and they are pretty much working the same now as they did after about flight #15.
On the other hand, I have a friend that has had to send i a half-dozen servos from the same plane due to outright failures. I helped him build and set up the plane and it is set up similarly to how mine is set up, so it is not a set up issue.
I have yet to hear about a perfect servo from any manufacturer, though...

I have 5 S9156 in my plane 85 cc and after 10 flights they develop a slop.
