Tail wires on bipes??

I have been looking for a bipe project just for something differant from the monos. Much too my horror just about every kit I look at has those terrible tail wires. QQ bipe, Aeroworks, hanger 9 and Pau. I HATE TAIL WIRES!! My question is why don't they design them out of these kits? They look terrible, they are a pain and create drag. Plus if they fail in flight you probably won't notice until it's on the ground in pieces. Maybe some of the designers can chime in here.

I guess you could over-build and leave them off. If you put together an ARF, best advice I'd give you is to put them ON!
Bi-planes are a draggy sort of affair...... Two wings slicing through the air give you a disturbed airflow when the tail section of the plane gets to that same disturbed air. More than likely you want to brace the devil out of it so it doesn't flutter or structurally implode. (Watch some U-Tube slow-motion videos and you'll see what I mean!)
Since you are wanting to get into the bi-plane loving stage of your modeling career, try giving all those flying wires a chance! Better yet......... Go take a ride in one (preferably an open cockpit one!) and listen too the sound they make...... I'm sure you'll have a change of heart. I used to own a real S-1 back in my young and crazy days as well as a 7AC Champ. (Tail braced too!) I wouldn't have it any other way! Good luck with your choice.

PAU's only got wires on the wing. Plus they are to scale. but i see what you mean, a bit of a job to put together at the field.

Check it out. I too dislike the tail wires, but am in love with the H9 Ultimate 10-300 46% so I deal with them. However if you are so inclined to wait a bit. Aeroworks will release their new 20-300 Ulitmate bipe.

The Python wires whistle like mad in flight sometimes. I love that sound now. But yes you do need to keep an eye on them as they are definitely structural!

Part of the issue is the tails are not air-foiled on these planes. Therefore there is no room for a stab tube(s.) I would think a full-width CF I-beam spar (or 2) would work. But I wouldn't want to be the one to test it!

On the Python the surfaces are very lightly built and yet super strong in the air.

My flying wires dont whistle on my Python, but the non airfoiled statement is correct. Although the wires are there structurally, I have flown mine with the wires loose on my QQ Python. First couple flights the wires would loosen (like all flying wires do until after a few flights). Never noticed a difference. The QQ Python does not have flying wires in the wings though, so the wings just bolt on. Stabs are glued in since there is no tube or spar, and the flying wires stay attached (but can be easily taken off for transportation purposes), so you dont have to put them on every time you go to the field.

I realize I could be opening a big can of personal opinion... but has anybody flown both the QQ Python and the PAU Ultimate? I've got a 100cc motor that needs an aiframe... my heart says QQ, but my wallet keeps making me look at the PAU. Are there any major differences in the air?

Jason Noll had it out at this past years Tuscon. It was only there as a part of a static display. Apparently it is still having final details ironed out before it goes to production. From what I understand it is a ways out yet.

Give the guys a call down at Aeroworks, they are always glad to help out with questions.

I havent flown both, but the QQ is a 3D monster. Flies precision really well too. It also flies a lot like a monowing since there isnt as much stagger as a normal bipe. This is also why it handles the wind better than most bipes as well. The wings kinda hide each other, so there is no place for wind to push on besides one or the other.

Take a look at this video around the 1 minute 18 second mark, you will see the very little stagger the wings have. This is also a good video of its 3D capabilities as well as precision.

The PAU ultimate would a be a sweet all around flying airplane. It has a ballistic roll rate, and with the short tail moment it does really good waterfalls. It also flys very good prescision. I havent flown the python, but one person ahs it at our field. and it seems to fly pretty good.
